Hi,

I picked up a Mayflash GC to USB adapter a while ago for my laptop in my dorm and it's been working great. However, I'm soon building a new PC in (most likely) a Fractal Core 500. This case happens to feature a 5.25" bay, which I feel a bit guilty leaving empty. My inner DIY-er told me this would be a perfect opportunity to mod front panel Gamecube controller ports! However, I'm not quite sure where to start.

Here are what the innards of the adapter look like. It's all removable, so as long as I can make a "shell" that could fit into the case and accommodate these parts I should be good. I do have access to a 3D printer, which should make this much easier. What would be the best way to proceed with modeling a bay for these parts? How would I get exact measurements and use those in a modeling program? I've never done any 3D modeling before, and especially not to scale for real-world use. Are there any 3D-savvy DIY-ers that could help me out here? Sorry for the (incredibly) vague post.

Thanks,

-Chris

I usually use a ruler(lol) but for really exact stuff I would buy some digital calipers. They are usually quite cheap and they give very exact measurements.

And I would do what @ThatOneRussian said and model the holes out of the middle of a 5.25 bay cover.

Could i use a design software to put holes in it to give a smoother look? How else would I cut holes in it? Also, you say you wouldn't put plastic in but wouldn't the PLA be plastic?

Oh, okay. Would it be better to use the already existing 5.25" face included with the case or just print a new one? Using the included might take a bit more work but might give a better product. The front of the case looks like this:
