so first question with free nas can i use different brands and different sizes of drives together? (not in a raid)

and also i have 1gb ddr2 would it use 4gb if i were to get a 4gb kit instead for an extra 10$ ?

and lastly is a lga 775 core 2 duo good enough for a small nas thats maybe 500gb and just for some backups and some file storage and video playback ? it will be coupled with 1/ 4gb of ram, idk the exact model im still trying to get some info off the guy thats selling it, all parts are used cause ,y budget is pretty low at around 50-60$ cad, i already have the drives, and a old 1 core hyper threaded pentium if i cant get a better cpu.

my plan is to get a gigabyte board and core 2 duo combo for about 10$ off a guy local, and either use the 1gb of ram i have or pick up a 4g kit for 10$ which leaves me about 30$ for a psu and some sata cables

iirc you need 1GB RAM for every 1TB (I really can't remember) and I think that a C2D should be ok but I haven't any experience in this field, just regurgitating information I saw on a similar thread, so don't take my word for it

ok, either way it will probably happen just wanted to see if it did slow it down, by how much.  ill probably end up going for the 4gb kit and sell my 1gb kit so if i ever want the nas for anything else or sell it as a pc then its a semi decent thing

also is it worth it to build a nas ? i have no true reason except im bored and i can do it on the cheap and im tired of seeing drives on my shelf, i would use it to have a second copy of all my pictures and my moms pictures and just kinda have little backups incase something dies in our systems, also might fill the rest of the space with some movies for when im bored :P

or should i use the 60$ on games or some stuff for my main pc (in sig)

More RAM is better amiright?

EDIT: I'd say that if you have the time, the money and some valuable data to store then go for it but your still need to backup the NAS itself to some external area just to make sure that you don't lose too much.
