Hi there,

I want to build myself a PC for school. The most intensive task that this PC will be doing is watching Netflix (on a 24' monitor) or possibly streaming movies to a TV over WiFi. I want videos to play fluently, no lagging/stuttering or anything like that. I live by a microcenter in Columbus Ohio so I have their pricing. My budget is ~550 (a little bit more is not a problem).

I already have a windows 7 copy, DVD drive, and a 1TB WD blue HDD. I want this PC to have a ssd in it (microcenter has a 250gb Samsung ssd for 90$) and I want the PC to stay relatively quiet and cool.

This PC will not be used for gaming so as long as the CPU itself can handle playing videos at 60 fps or higher without stuttering or lag, no dedicated GPU will be needed. Also longevity would be nice....

My microcenter has the i5-4590 for $160 and the AMD a10 7870k for $130. Idk if i would feel comfortable with an i3? I want this PC to be fast. If I go with the AMD side, then i have to spend more money on fast ram and a mobo that can handle the faster speed ram?

side note: my budget of ~ 550$ is for the pc itself. After I figure out what PC I will be building I will choose a monitor so it would be nice to have a mobo with at least a DVI output..... (vga/hdmi/anything else is a plus too)

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the Forum.

You really don't need much budget for this, you could build a PC that can game pretty well with that budget.

Sig under construction.

i3 is MORE then enough. Some people, i don't know if you are like this but if they have a strong PC it gives them the urge to do other things then what is required for school. The i5 is also enough, would last 5-6 years EASILY on just doing basic things like netflix, ect

i5 is a minimum IMO. Just try to find a deal with an i5, 8GB RAM and an SSHD (or better yet an SSD) and you'll be good to go. My mother has an A8 in her work HP laptop and it is slow AF even with 8GB RAM and an M.2 SSD.

but that's a laptop ;~;

APUs in laptops are different I think. Before I got my 750ti, my A6-3650 was not the best but it played games pretty decent at 720-1080p -60FPS

Woopsy, i read laptop not PC :S

In that case an AMD APU (they just launched some new ones) would be better than an intel and you can spend the rest of the money on an SSD.

I think you should take those things out and change the build up a little. => Instead of apu put in an i3 or i5, the integrated graphics should be enough for school work.
