I've never built on such a tight budget before, I'm normally the £2k+ kinda guy so your guys help would be appreciated.

I'm building a budget gaming rig for my brother and have ~£400 to spend

He's always been a console kid and wants to join the PCMR.

He will mainly be playing CS, COD, BF4 and GTA V with a 1080p 60Hz monitor.

Here is my proposed mATX build.

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170                                 @        £89.33

GPU: XFX Radeon R9 380                             @       £155.99

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H81M-H                       @        £34.81

RAM: Crucial CT102464BD160B 8 GB          @        £31.75

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB                       @        £35.99

PSU: Corsair CXM 430W                               @        £39.20

Case: Thermaltake Core V21                        @        £48.68

Extras: OCZ SSD 128GB (that i don't use any more)

Total: £435.75

Prices are from amazon UK cause i have Prime and <3 the free delivery. Prices seem to fluctuate daily which is annoying.

What do you think to this build in regards to its aims of playing most FPS games @ 1080p 60Hz

Thanks.

I essentially went with SeaSonic(XFX) for the PSU and a 380 - pretty similar else :D

I didnt mean to post with such little info added. Apparently tab + space = enter.

OP - get the XFX PSU or an EVGA G2/GS - CX are bad for gaming builds.

You may want to get a cheaper case like a Core 1000 and step up that motherboard, the reviews on it don't look too promising

I quite like the aesthetic of a cube PC but i will look into it, thanks.

Also if you wanna save up just a bit more you could step up to a 390, which would totally be overkill for 1080p

Hang on I totally fit a 390 in the budget, by cheaping out on like every other part, namely the RAM, motherboard, and hard drive, probably not recommended to go that route

Athlon 860K is fine with a 380 but a 390 will be bottleneck probably

Compared to the i3 it'll be a bit slower in games, but overall it'll run fine, I use a 750k with no issue.

Mostly where the intel CPU is going to shine is in games like total war or ARMA.

Buy the 390 over the 380 is more for "future proofing" since next year zen and kaby lake are going to be out, and your GPU isn't going to be much of a bottleneck if you spend the extra money on it now.

Like down the line if you step up the CPU the 390 is going to pull ahead by a fair amount compared to the 380.

so ya, up to you, but I'd try to get the 390.

OP - get the XFX PSU or an EVGA G2/GS - CX are bad for gaming builds.

To emphasize the point....

OP - If you can, go with the 390 over the 380, hands down for games,...a MAXED out details type of card, compared to the 380's (turn some small things down) in some games... I've had a HD7950 (essentially a 280, lets call it that) @ 1250/1250Mhz which would perform slightly faster than that stock 380, and then when I moved to a 290 (again, similar to 390) it was a nice boost to performance, even with the OC'd "280" to the stock 290.

Antialiasing went back up to max (or forcing higher res with DSR/VSR) in some games where the HD7950/280 would start to suffer not being as smooth in heavier particle count scenes, the 290/390 is just gunna laugh at those types of things, and carry on.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
