Making a budget gaming build. Thanks for commenting :)http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bJDPpg Please don't leave whole builds, just suggestions to edit this one.

Because you can't adjust the multiplier on an i5-4460, it wouldn't make sense to buy a Z97 motherboard.

I recommend an H97, H87 or H81 motherboard.

You can get Windows 7 a lot cheaper. Win 7 and 8 keys are often sold on eBay for around 20-25$.

Get a cheaper mobo (and possibly a cheaper case :D) but other than that looks really good, you even chose an XFX power supply!

That isn't worth it at all.

You would literally only increase the clock speed for over 200$.

Then I would rather wait a little longer and buy a 4670k/4690k now or cut some corners by buying Win7/8 on ebay and don't buy those fans. They aren't good fans anyway.

Maybe you can find a cheaper Z97 board and case aswell.

So either get an i5-4670/90k now and cut some corners or take the i5-4460 and upgrade in like 3-4 years maybe when the upgrade is actually worth something.

Looks good, black and red isa lwaysa  good color scheme.  The i5 non-k is fine but i would recommend getting the k version now only if you plan to upgrade to it later, but either way, its a good build.  Have Fun.

True but not 3-4 years... if he get the non-k i5 now and a i7 next year, it would be perfectly fine and would be better performance.  Fans are fans, unless you getting noctuas (hard to fit with colors) it will be fine.  Yes a possible cheaper mobo butt hat cheap already and with the red colors, it will look great.

He obviously plays games. Tell me what kind of performance increase he could see with an i7-4790k. The 4790k isn't a good upgrade for playing games.

I was considering that myself as I currently play on an i5-4670. A lot of people told me that the gaming performance wouldn't increase enough to justifie the cost of an i7. And they are right.

Have you seen the performance increase in gaming between Haswell and Skylake? It's almost non existend.

Fans aren't just fans. Those fans are quite loud and that can be really annoying. Apart from that he will get fans with the case. So why buy even more even he is on a tight budget?

Like I said, he is on a budget. He should first and foremost look at performance. Looks don't matter. What is a PC worth that might look great when you'll lose performance because of it.

Put an i5-4690k in there.

If that goes over his budget use an H97/87 motherboard. That way he gets at least a higher clockspeed without overclocking for the same price and only has to buy a new motherboard if he wants to overclock instead of a new CPU.

To some, looks matter.  The fans may be loud but that is his choice.  Are you kidding?  A i5 non-k version compared to a i7 4790k?  Of coarse you would see a difference, yeah for $400 (CDN) to upgrade from a i5 wont be the best for price to performance but if it ever went on sale then it might be worth it.  It would also be worth it for the editing/livestreaming if they ever wanted to do that.

I'm here to inform him that those fans are garbage. He probably didn't even know that.

The main difference between an i5 and i7 are the clock speeds and hyperthreading. Hyperthreading doesn't matter at all in games.

The difference in clock speed doesn't impact his performance because of his video card. My i5-4670 is almost never a bottleneck and I'm using two GTX 980s. Are you really trying to tell me, that an i5 4460 is a bottleneck and an i5-4690k or i7-4790k would eliminate that bottleneck? You are the one that must be kidding.

Intel CPUs do usually not go on sale. An i7 2700k is now even more expensive than an i7-4790k. It isn't worth it to wait and hope for a price drop.

"It would also be worth it for editing/livesteaming IF they ever wanted to do that".

Yes, if. You don't even know if he wants to do that. Currently he is asking for a budget gaming build. If I would think like you I could recommend a 5960X to anyone.

he said that he will upgrade to an unlocked i5 later on

Yes, I know that. But that's stupid. He would pay over $200 for literally 300 - maybe 1000 Mhz. That is just a waste of money.

If he really wants that i5-4690k so bad, then it is definitly better to buy an i5-4690k now and buy a cheaper motherboard. That way he gets at least the 300Mhz higher clock speed for the same money and only has to upgrade the motherboard which is a lot cheaper than upgrading the CPU.

hey, relax, i just made a build based on what op wanted. I know it is wiser to get a k cpu now, but w/e.He also might sell the locked one to get the k later on
