Now I know this sounds dumb on my part but I'm stuck on whether to get the GTX 970 or R9 390. The thing preventing me from choosing is whether I have Shadow Play or not (I use it a lot I currently have a GTX 750ti). But I do know there is a AMD recording solution called GVR Raptor I think and is it any good compared to Shadow Play?

AMD's solution can't record on the desktop and overall is not as good in my opinion, although I have not used it extensively.

Raptr is decent - nothing special.

I'd say use OBS, Fraps or anything else - I've heard friends complain a lot about both.

In terms of performance decrease theres no difference but in terms of interface a lot people say GVR is bad how ever you can always use OBS which is what I use and a lot of people prefer it over Shadowplay anyways

What is so good about OBS? Quality?

Shadowplay has it's issues and I've even seen one instance where the video was full of artifacts for on apparent reason.

Raptr isn't the most elegant solution either and can sometimes screw up.

Both are relatively crappy and I'd strongly suggest software designed specifically by people who want to deliver a good experience not a marketing gimmick. OBS, Xsplit, Fraps - any of those

Go with the 390, the AMD equivilent is just as good as shadowplay.

However what I recommend using is the video recording software that comes with MSI Afterburner, it works the best in my opinion

Sony Vegas is by far the best

AMD's recording is a little tricky to setup. No performance loss like shadowplay it just isn't as user friendly as Nvidia's solution. It's fine after you've set it up.

If you have an intel CPU I would recommend using QuickSync. it will impact FPS less than H.264 or shadowplay, and it's already built in, you just have to utilize it.

quality isn't really that much of a difference, at least for live streaming. not sure how it does for local recordings though.

And in addition to this. AMD is WAY faster in Sony Vegas editing then Nvidia is... like WAY WAY faster

My biggest fuss is losing replay/shadow mode because I like to save "that sick moment" without having to fill up my hard drive and constantly have to go in and delete things

I think Raptr does a similar thing - during the first 4 months of use I had 100GB of saved 2-3min replays of certain events.

Yes you have that. You can record up to 20 min @ 720p or auto record every time you play.
