PSU Overkill.. Is it BAD?

Go to solution Solved by sirtoby,

An overkill PSU has up- and downsides: 80Plus rated psu's reach their highest efficiency at 50% load. Your system wont draw more than 300W (maybe a bit more when overclocked). BUT you will never be able to get the money you spent on a high wattage PSU back with the higher efficiency and lower consumption . For your current system, get a 500-550W psu. If you want to futureproof get a 700W- 750W PSU

Greetings!! I am finalizing my build and all that's left is my PSU.. Actually the "Sales Person" where I ordered my parts suggested a 1000W PSU to power up my system so I agreed since he was the "Expert".
When one of the customers said that that's too much power for my build and would actually be bad and inefficient. So I put a hold onto buying my PSU so I can consult with the Real Experts (I HOPE!!)
Let me hear your thoughts on this please.

Here's what I'm powering (or going to power)

1x     Intel Core i5-4690K (Going to be Overclocked)
1x     MSI Z97 Gaming 5

4x     4GB Avexir Raiden RAM

1x     MSI GTX 960 2GB OC Tiger (Going to be Overclocked)
2x     1TB Toshiba HDD
1x     256GB Samsung SSD
1x     DVDRW
1x     EK D5 Pump for my Watercooling loop
2x     LED Strips
6x     120mm Thermaltake Riing 12 Fans
1x     Coolermaster Stock Fan

Peripherals:
Razer Deathstalker
Razer Mamba
Razer Tiamat
Razer  Leviathan
Logitech C920 Webcam

** I might be upgrading to either 2x GTX 970s or 1x 980/Titan in the future though (If I can save some money :D)

What would be an appropriate PSU for my Config?

Brands I can possibly get are: Corsair,FSP,Seasonic.

EDIT: Is getting a 1000W PSU BAD FOR MY SETUP? What are the CONS if so?

Well you won't need more than 500 watts even if you upgrade.

550-600 watts is fine (or a quallity PSU at least)

The con is that you waste money at buying the 1000 watts PSU as well as while running since the max. efficiency is around 50% what you will never hit.

It's not bad you just won't be using anything near 1000w since you system doesn't need that much.

Yeah, it's not bad. It's a great future proof option

Question: Does the 1000W pull more electricity from the wall from a 850W PSU?

Like am I gonna get a higher Electric Bill If I'd be using a 1000W PSU?

its just salespeople being salespeople. Go with somewhere around 500watts. That would leave you room if for anything. Or if you plan on sli'ing, you could look at 600-650. High end corsair or high end evga. Usually all gold units from either will be fine. Also xfx and seasonic are pretty good brands.

IF they have the same rating (e.g. gold) than yes. Otherwise the one with the better rating will peobably be better.

I would go for a Razer Deathadder (mouse), get a good pair of headphones and a USB mic. As for the keyboard, maybe you could go get a mechanical one, /r/MechanicalKeyboards, if noise is an issue, stick with brown switches, other wise get blues/greens

No. Theoretically yes, but the efficiency of a, say, gold rating PSU, is 92% at 50% load and 88% at 20% load. The 4% diifference isn't going make a sizeable increase for your bill.

Well aside from the Mechanical Keyboards being expensive, They're loud as hell.. and I'm usually gaming during the night when my kid is sleeping.. So i dont want to make too much noise with my keyboard..

Oh, is that so.. Thanks for that.. I won't look too much of a noob now.. I was going to ask that in the store, if they had PSU with RED LEDs.. Any suggestions on what PSU I can maybe get? Appearance isn't important since I'd have a shroud covering the PSU.
