Modmic instead of a Lavalier?

TheGhzGuy

Hello all,

I'm in the process of putting together all the parts for a Youtube channel (Camera, Lighting, Audio, etc) and I'm haveing a hard time decideing on the mic. There's a few good, reletivly cheap lavalier mics, there's the Antlion Modmic 4.0, or I could use a condenser mic and have it on top of the camera, out of sight. Please let me know of any other options. Thanks!

A bit off topic, for what you want.

Do you actually want to spend money on all that equipment, with a chance of not succeeding.

Youtube takes hardwork and dedication to do.

I grabbed a Rode SmartLav and was really impressed with the quality out of the box. Its a bit annoying to sync the audio up but even so for the price its excellent.

I post this whenever I see a modmic 4 mentioned.

Good mic, I have a small bit of auto noise reduction in my realtek drivers but otherwise this is what it sounds like unedited at maximum bitrate in windows. https://soundcloud.com/silvererer/modmic-4-unidirectional-audio-quality-for-ltt

Microphone placement 1cm away from face over the corner of the mouth.

I would say its 85% as good as the Sennheiser wireless LAVs we use at work for presentations.

Ultimately which mic you choose matters less than how much effort you put into proper set up. A 10 dollar clip-on can be made to sound great with enough tweaking.

Not all YouTubers spent money doing it, people just did it for fun and it became a thing. Then when it gets all professional is where you need proper equipment.
