Xeon vs i5

Go to solution Solved by KamiKatze,

I'd say it depends if you want to use dual GPUs. It's generally recommended to use an overclockable CPU with SLI or Crossfire to close the gap to the high GPU-performance.

With a single GPU though it doesn't really matter. Hyperthreading is nice to have and the clockspeeds of the Xeon (1231-v3) are high enough to last you for the next couple of years when looking at the (almsot) stagnant performance increase from generation to generation of CPUs.

Hi,

So I am wondering if I should get a Xeon or an i5. I do nearly always play Osu! but do sometimes code stuff and play GTA V. The only good point for a 4690k for me is its OCability, and I DO find overclocking fun. Also, it'll last longer in the long run if I can OC it. Any ideas?

EDIT: Yes I am still retired from this forum, but if you read my goodbye thread, it does say I will ask questions.

nah, I always stick with the 1 strong GPU mindset. Thanks :)

You do not need anymore than 4 cores or threads for gaming (You Probably have heard this 100's of times)

I would get the i5 so you can OC.

That's what they all say, but with DX12; games AND APPLICATIONS are going to see better multi-core support.

Yay, now people will not hate on the AMD FX line (Not going to happen for many reasons)

I mean just by how the industry to proceeding, it's buying the current FX line some time, but you have to understand that the single core performance is still really bad....

And they suck up power like pigs so...

I understand how the FX sucks in most tasks!

If you find overclocking fun then I'd probably go i5... although Intel Haswell overclocking is quite dull for the most part.
