PPPoA or PPPoE?

What's the difference?

- CPU: Intel i7 3770 - GPU: MSI R9 390 - RAM: 16GB of DDR3 - SSD: Crucial BX100 - HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB -

PPPoE is basically letting your router or whatever be in control of your modem, handling logging in to your ISP etc. through your modem.

PPPoA is basically letting your modem handle all of the configuration and authentication and connects straight to your ISP.

Use PPoE if you have a modem and router use PPoA if you only have a modem. Mine currently is PPoE as the included router with most modems is trash so I then can hook up a better one

The difference is basicly how the data is encapsulated.

 

They are both point to point protocols and will generally be invisible to the end user - everything happens between the modem and the ISP.

 

There are pros and cons with both protocols and it generally does not matter much for the user which ones is used by the ISP.

 

PPPoA usually has a bit less latency and the MTU is a bit bigger as it allows for a MTU of 1518 (including the headers) where as PPPoE only allows an MTU of 1500 (including the headers).
