Need to switch my desktop into an editing station (specs of current system in my sig). I've got about $500 to spend, I was thing more ram, and a new intel cpu and mobo.
Note: I do have an ssd in my system already.

500$? That won't get too much better. 8320 with an OC is decent for that - better than an i5 actually. A Xeon would be faster but not by much. Save up for X99 if you ask me.

You could go with any H97 motherboard with a Xeon 1231v3, the Xeon is a hyperthreaded i5 and another kit of the same ram would help (so another 2x4 of g.skill ares if possible) but I don't know about mix and match.

Just save your cash for next year and shoot for a zen or kaby lake system, you'll end up with a 40-50% performance increase over the maybe 20-30% you'd get now, and that's before overclocking.

just overclock your CPU if your motherboard can handle it, and coolermaster has some of the better price:performance AIOs, also fairly silent
