Just picked up a z87 Maximus Vi impact board. Best CPU?

Im about to build amini itx pc, the only componant I've purchased is the motherboard (Asus Maximus impact VI) /can overclock.

I got the board super cheap. The rest of my build is pretty basic (gtx 960).

I'm wondering which processor to buy. I want to buy a i5 4690k and a watercooler but i cant really afford to do so. So I have three options.

1) Get a 750ti insted of 960 and spend the money on a cpu/cooler and upgrade gpu later on.

2) Get a G3258 overclock it and buy 15 later on

3) Buy an i3 and gtx 960 and dont overclock?

I want to use adobe cs6/ stream/ edit music

Thanks :)

You should get a Quad Core more than anything

What resolution are you playing at?

Because he had a hard drive.

That board is ivy bridge - Pentium G3258 is Haswell Refresh. Don't think it will fit

Some Z87 motherboards need a BIOS update to support newer chips (anything over haswell).

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

Microsoft Apple Valve Google Facebook Oculus HTC AMD Intel Nvidia

I'm using this data to judge this site's biases so people can post in a more objective way.

Z87 is haswell. The pentium g3258 would work great in it. But for your needs, it sounds like an i5 would be a better choice.

I'm playing at 1080p potentially not even at max settings. I;m hoping to upgrade over time

4690K/4670K is what you want. Pentium is very wasteful on that board

I can't really afford k version of an i5 atm. Should I buy the pentium chip and upgrade later? Or settle for a locked i3/i5? will they be good enough for what i need?

i5 4460 is a LOT better than a Pentium. OC or no OC - nothing can match 2 extra cores.

it's good enough for any game - you won't see usage past 80% even in most demanding maxed games.

Ok thanks, so the 4 cores is huge? and the clock speed isn't as important? Any opinions on non gaming tasks?

I would opt for the locked i5 over the pentium. It's worth the extra cash imo.

the 1.5GHz you can get on the Pentium will be roughly as powerful as 30% of an actual CPU core :)

2 cores vs 4 cores. i5 ofc. Large improvement.

Hyper threading isn't as good as physical cores. The i5 is superior. OP, You said that you want to do things like streaming and some light production. The 2 physical cores would be a great benefit.
