So, I want to send my Fiance' a digital photo frame filled with our pictures for her desk at work. She's doing a work-study program at a school in Florida (I'm in Oregon).

But here's the deal.....they are ridiculously expensive for high resolution ones.... The "good" ones that don't seem like they will die, or, actually have an 800x600 resolution (yeah....) are at least $40 USD for an 8" one.

So, enter the new Fire tablet. It's 7", 1024x600 display. and $50 USD...... That, plus a home-made wooden stand and a photo frame app... Or, any other number of tablets that can do the same thing. We have a super awesome photo frame, that is also a full-fledged tablet. I'm sure that when she's done with school and heads back here, she'd love the tablet in general to have and use.

My question is this: What's the downside? Sure, maybe it's 2 extra clicks to start up the app - but I'm also sure I can get an auto start app to start the digital frame app? I just feel I'm missing something...

downside:

expensive

upside:

it would probably die fast

like digital picture frames are made for being on 12 hours a day

thoes are meant for watching videos and stuff

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

What? I just posted above that the brand new amazon tablet is $10 more than a mediocre digital photo frame.

As a photo frame, it would be plugged in all the time anyway.

even so

thoes tablets arent meant for being on all the time

but it would be a good alternative

says the price point

50$

That's illogical.

$10 ear buds aren't meant to be listened to "all the time?"

A $10 chair can't be sat in for extended periods?

The price plays no part in the manufacturer deciding how long their product should be used.

Be rational. I'm sure you know how to be.

I don't see a problem with using a table as a photo frame as long as the tablet doesn't overheat it should be fine.

The stars died for you to be here today.

A locked bathroom in the right place can make all the difference in the world.

Depends on whether your Fiance is tech-savvy enough to at least be able to reboot and get back into the photo viewer if it crashes or something, and willing to do so. A dedicated "digital photo frame" type device will have few problems and can be restarted simply by unplugging it if necessary, then it will immediately boot back into displaying photos. A Kindle Fire on the other hand will require a little setup beforehand (a lot of setup if you're going to try having it automatically display pictures when you turn it on) and might have more challenges loading additional photos onto it. On the other hand, I suspect that the Fire will have very decent build quality for its price and has the added advantage of being things OTHER than a picture frame sometimes.

Basically, the Kindle Fire is a tablet, so she needs to use it as a tablet even if she just displays pictures with it. If you really want to send her something that she takes out of the box and it shows pictures of treasured moments when she turns it on, go with dedicated hardware.
