For a new build, you should probably go for Skylake. When upgrading, Z97 is the better choice, as you don't have to fork out more money for new RAM when doing a CPU upgrade.

EDIT: Z97 is still worth the money (consider how Sandy Bridge is still relevant), but for a new build, I would go with Skylake, considering the prices have dropped a fair bit.

until the skylake prices stabilize Z170 isnt really worth it in most cases yet.

that said, alternate has them at decent price. (you have to wait for them to come in tho.)

I was wondering if building a Z97 build is still worth it or should i go with the new Z170

My choise is i5 4960k or i5 6600K

DDR 3 16gb 1886 ram

Or

DDR 4 16gb with i dont know how much MHz

I love my Z97; follow your posts btw; makes it that you can see when people reply.

Sandy Bridge is still a relevant generation, so z97 is still worth it. However, Z170 has some very nice perks like gobs of PCIe connectivity. I would personally love some of that, but my 2600K hasn't started holding anything back yet, so... I'll not switch for a while.

Yes it's still worth it, though if you can afford z170, get it.

Depends on the price.

The skylake cpu has 5-10% more performance, so if it would increase the price of your build by 5-10% its still good price/performance.

Also you get new stuff like usb 3.1, ultra m.2 and nvme support that may or may not be worth a lot to you.

Doing a new build, I personally would really not go Z97. I hate having a new rig with instantly old hardware. If you're on a budget it may be a different story depending on where you live, but that's just my opinion.

Wrong. OP was not asking if it was worth upgrading from, they asked if it was worth buying new. No one should be buying Sandy Bridge in 2015, so no it isn't a relevant generation.

I would get Skylake over Haswell.

Generally speaking, yes it is still worth it. If the prices for each are roughly equivalent then go with Skylake. If you live near a Micro Center however, you can pick up a Z97 based system for nearly $100 cheaper; money that can be put towards a more powerful graphics card or allocated to an SSD that didn't fit into the budget before.
