Home file server + firewall

I am planning to start a home file server using a raspberry pi 2 and two hard drives. I am also planning to start a firewall using some old computers that are just collecting dust. After some research, I found that two of these tasks needs two different OSs. Is there an OS that could manage both at once? If no, what software would you recommend for my firewall. I just need my firewall for blocking and allowing websites, nothing fancy.

clearos can act as a fileserver and is a firewall, but personally i would go with windows server or freenas for fileserver and pfsense or untangle for a firewall, but i dont think any of these work on pi

dont bother with a rpi as a fileserver, usb2.0 just doesnt cut it anymore these days...

Use ubuntu or raspbian on the pi with an smb server for the fileserver. For the firewall os, try using pfsense. Your firewall box will need to have 2 NICs

You can make a firewall with iptables on whatever Linux you want... it's not easy but it works....

 

Yes you can install iptables on Rasbian

Just use an old computer get a network card so you have atleast 3 Ethernet ports, Put vmware onto the old desktop and PFsense for the firewall and your choice for storage OS
