980TI vs. Waiting for Pascal?

CC268

So...my current though is to go with a MSI R9 390 for now and then upgrade to Pascal next year if they really are a great card. I guess I am having a tough time swallowing the thought of paying $680 for a TI and then having Pascal come out and smoke the TI.

By the way I am gaming on a 1080P monitor currently so I am thinking the 390 is the better way to go anyways?

If you are on 1080p I dont think you have much reason to go anything above R9 390. GTX 980ti would be prety much overkill and waste of money if you have only 60Hz.

Just a thought, the 980ti will destroy games at 1080p, however usign NVIDIA's DSR you can play your games at an effective 4k and still get great framerates. Plus when Pascal comes out you could probably pick up another 980ti for like 300-400$.

Imo just get a 980ti.

I might upgrade to pascal next year if it blows the shit out of the 900 series. (I've got a 970 and will need to upgrade for some of my future monitor plans)

Hmm...idk I just feel like I can save a lot of cash with a 390 and still game perfectly fine on 1080p. Next year if I get a 1440p monitor I can always upgrade to a Pascal card...is this a stupid thought process? lol

i'm using my 970 just fine on my pretty overkill monitor setup, it even handles multiple games at once just fine.

but yeah, seeing how triple-A titles seem to more and more go towards being VRAM hogs, an upgrade may be in place.

(the most demanding thing i have is minecraft with a shaderpack that has proven to cripple a 780, my 970 pulls a decent "almost 60" out of it)

I plan on having 3 16:9 1080p monitors along with either a 21:9 1080p monitor or 21:9 1440p monitor lol (21:9 in the middle, 16:9 1080p monitors on the top and sides)

980 Ti man. Why wait? If you wait for the best you will never pull the trigger on anything.

Idk I get the impression that unless you buy a 980TI you won't be able to game on high settings lol...does a 390 really suck that bad?

i currently have 1440p as a main, 1400p turned 90° for social stuff, and 1600p for watching media content.

most ghetto setup ever, all 3 monitors arent even near representing each other's colors

all 3 are upscaled trough nvidia drivers, because enabling super sampling in games would be for skrubs.

depending on the benchmark you look at, somewhere in between the 970 and 980 off the top of my head.

may be wrong tho. (if i am wrong, quote me with benchmarks, people LOVE to see numbers.)

Lol nice, right now I've only got a 1050p monitor that has a yellowish tint and a 1080p monitor with pretty damn amazing colours. (maybe a little blue heavy or something, but not a big deal)

well, its all about spending the right amount of money at the right time.

for all we know the "gtx 1080" will be god almighty, and the "titan k" will be a fken quantum computer.

--

and i'm not too much of a fan of picking on the DX12 thing, but if that actually proves to be an issue for the 900 series, this isnt the right moment to spend on a potential "long term" card.

How is the MSI 980TI? I can get the EVGA SC+ locally, but the MSI 980TI would match my MSI M7 motherboard ;p

No point getting 980ti and while staying 1080p. You ought to just buy a kickass monitor now and get a Pascal later.
