I am trying to help my school out by trying to convince them to change their current Dell Latitude D630s for desktops in their computer lab.
The computers just need to be excellent in running Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Basically, the computers needs to be able
to handle whatever an IGCSE ICT Practical Paper tells the student to do on that computer.
So far I've gotten this;
  • Intel Celeron G1840
  • Asrock H81M-HG4
  • Kingston Generic 4GB DDR3
  • Currently planned monitor: A 17" Dell E178fPc
  • Logitech MK100 Combo
  • AVF Shieldo (With PSU)

This will cost around USD 180 (MYR 770)

Limit is at USD 200 (MYR 860)

Im from Malaysia..... Wooooo!!! The land where 1 USD is 4.33 MYR...

PCPartPicker wont do for me...  :(

Whats wrong with the D630's?

It's a dual core CPU with 4GB of RAM.  Throw Windows 10 on it, and it will run whatever you want for production.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Go for the Core i3, very nice-performing processor and the integrated graphics would come in useful for that application.

The PCs at my school use the iGpu on the i3s, they run fine.

Which i3 would you recommend?

APU!

What APU and motherboard do you recommend?

Do you have AM1 based CPUs in your area? You can get really cheap quad cores that'll be low wattage and run well for what you need. Also maybe get some 60gbs SSD in on it.

Where are you buying the parts from?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

From the global amazon, should give some idea on the parts, It should be able to ship to where you're at, but it might be less expensive on your local website.

Also there's an AM1 board that comes with wifi, costs a bit more though, might not be needed

Going to want a 3850 or 5350 if it's within the budget, anything less is a dual core

If you want to get fancy you could get like an 8320 machine and run like 3 virtual machines on it each with their own keyboard/mouse, so you'd only need like 2 of those in total. Each would have 2 cores dedicated to it, and the hard drive could just be split between them, SSD might be better in that case.

If you want to get really crazy you could probably do like 7 virtual machines on the 8320 machine, but then everything would be single core, and that probably wouldn't be ideal.

SSD..... why not? but would prefer a HDD

That motherboard is not available here... nor is the case and PSU.

Normal RAM is fine.

The Core i3 4170, it's at 3.7GHz and has hyperthreading.

Very quick too, for general-use stuff it has more performance than most people will ever need.

Too expensive

Well an SSD is probably going to work better overall since even a small one will use less power and be faster than a hard drive, can't imagine you guys would need much storage for mostly word processing.

And ya, the multiple virtual machine thing is just a crazy idea, but it could work well.

Still more than enough to do Office.  Throw Windows 10 on it and call it a day.

My school has dell optiplex 990's with 8gb of ram and an i7-2600. If you're school is like mine, they store everything on a central server and only the programs are stored on the pc itself.

Well, that's probably network related.  Not the local machine.

doesn't mean the local machine isn't sending the request back hundreds of times a second.

Not all schools are like that, or they don't have the networking capacity to do it. :P

My school is just a bit lazy and so we have the servers that hold our accounts (which get copied onto a computer when we login), and then we have some storage servers. That's about it. :(
