USB 3.1 backwards compatible with 3.0?

If I buy a USB 3.1 memory stick, will it work at USB 3.0 speeds in a USB 3.0 port? Or will it not be compatible?

Does anybody know the difference between the two types of USB?

The only diffference is the speed, but they are compatible with each other.

It'll be the exact same thing if you plugged a USB 3 drive into a USB 2 port.

just with an added .1

If it fits, it will work, and if it doesn't fit then you can use an adapter to make it fit and then it will work. That's how USB has always been, doesn't matter what revisions.

Hi there @

Yes, the USB 3.1 standard is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. However, if you connect a USB 3.1 device to a USB 3.0 port, then the speed will be limited to the speed of the port, so the maximum available speed will be 5.0 Gb/s.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Cheers! :)
