Sooo... What's going on?

My university claims it has gigabit ethernet hookups in all the dorms (best speedtest I've seen is about 400 down and 850 up so I believe them) but recently it's been shitting the bed with dropped connections. This is a ping to google to show how sparse the connection can be - almost to the point where it's unusable. Do they just have poor infrastructure that can't handle too many users all at the same time, or does it sound like I'm being throttled (may or may not have been torrenting a lot of textbooks) or does it sound like something else to you guys?

In my dorm, I can't even ping Google. I don't know why but pinging any IP's doesn't work. I can do a speed test just fine, and the net is pretty quick, but for whatever reason pinging with cmd doesn't yield any results. On my desktop, laptop or the school computers in the labs, the result is the same.

The speeds in my dorm will get as low at 5 mb/s down at times, but the connection seems to be pretty good (think they are using ruckus hardware)

run tunnel bear somewhere close to you and see if its ip throttle if not all thouse HS kiddes are out to play with their woodies

Get urself a range extender.  Or just tell everyone to fap some other time.  We don't have time for that plus I find that a clearer sound is much better than picture so maybe dolby surround porn with 1080p

I tried running a vpn and it's the same story. I'm pretty sure it's just a network that can't handle all the residents and it's dropping packets everywhere as a result.

I bet some maintenance guy accidentally cut the fiber.

 

P.S. Happened at my work, some construction dudes cut our fiber and even when AT&T repaired it the signal was trash. Literally just like that.
