Alrighty, so a little while back, about a month ago, I shipped my computer from California to Arizona and it came in broken. USPS won't refund me so I need to buy replacement parts, it's just that I don't know what's broken. So here is the issue: when i turn on my computer the CPU, hard drive, and DVD drive power on(but it also closes right after it fully extends outward), but nothing else. No case fans, no Wi-Fi card, nothing. The USB ports don't work and it doesn't send out a display signal. My friend and I have singled it down to two possibilities, the PSU (a Corsair CX 750 Watt, not modular) or the motherboard (A stock one from the prebuilt PC this used to be). We're almost certain it's the motherboard, but I would like to know the issue before I buy new parts. Sometimes when I power it on the CPU fan runs VEEEEERY fast and will not power off unless I turn it off from the PSU. I can provide pics if necessary. Thanks for any help I receive!

My build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sdbpcf

Inb4, "why a good cpu but awful gpu?"

To me it sounds like the motherboard...  do you have any beep codes?

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Forgive me, what are those?

Beep codes?  Umm  You need to look it up if you dont know.  I wouldnt trust anyone to so much as turn my computer on if they didnt know what a beep code was.

It sounds like the motherboard to me. Beep codes are the beeps computers make if they have a post speaker, if your computer never beeped before when you turned it on then you don't have one. The series of beeps you get indicate the problem.

My rig:

If theres a header on the motherboard with four pins labelled something like spkr, you could try to get hold if a speaker and connect it to the header to check for beeps.

I don't have any external speakers, just a headset and monitor. If it helps at all it uses UEFI bios. At least that's what the board says.

Okay, thank you for checking that out.  If there isn't any beep codes, and no other issues then I'd suggest trying one thing really quick...  take all the parts out of the computer and try booting it outside of the case.  Remember, take EVERYTHING apart, even if its just a cable.  This way you rule out any cable coming loose and such.

Also try turning it on bit by bit. First try without the GPU, HDDs and a single stick of RAM, if that doesn't work, try the other stick... if nothing works, try the PSU on a different computer.

Just did that, took everything besides the hard drive, DVD drive, and unscrewing the motherboard. So I took out all PCI things, and every single wire from the PSU. Nothing different.

Tried that, didn't work and can't do the PSU thing because I don't have an extra desktop. And my friends don't have any extra PSUs and won't disassemble their PC to test it.

That sucks, you could have it looked at a local PC repair shop, ask them if they're willing to check if it works.

Alright, sounds like a good idea, thanks.

A power supply tester is only like $20 on Amazon.  That is certainly cheaper than buying a power supply then realizing that it isn't the problem.  But I'm willing to bet on it being the power supply.

I second that. The PSU can still power some stuff and be ruined. that's what it sounds like, things to check for the mother board would be blown capacitors, dark spots, odd smells, and even not glowing under black light (the silicon) easy way to check boards and ram, if the edge doesn't glow under UV its burnt

Troubleshooting a pc will make you believe in gremlins.
