Hey folks, first time builder here. I am looking to build a gaming rig and I could use some advice. I have read and watched a lot about building and I pretty comfortable with that. But I want to make sure that the parts that I plan to choose are good, and work together of course! I have a couple of options planned.

My main gaming is War Thunder, World of Tanks (and Warships), and some racing games. I am not a big FPS player. I do like good strategy games but they tend to not be very graphics heavy. Other than that I mainly do ordinary network stuff. I am looking to have a system that will last a god long time so I am purposely making it a bit OP. Besides, I may get into other things… not heavy 3D graphics but basic stuff. Starship rendering for my short stories and alike. ;)

So… here is what I am thinking. Main parts:

Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl Silent ATX Mid Tower Case

Corsair RM650

Corsair Hydro Series H1001 GTX extreme performance cooler

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB

WD Black series 1TB 7200 rpm 64MB

Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB)

Mushkin 240 GB SSD

Here is where I have my options for the brains of the system:

Asus H97-pro gamer LGA1150 motherboard

With either an Intel i7-4790K 4.0 or an i5-4690K 3.5

Or going AMD

Asus Sabertooth 990FX with an AMD FX-9590 Vishera 4.7 (I can drop the cooler above since this comes with one.

I know, AMD versus Intel. I am leaning Intel for longevity. Am I right? What are your all’s thoughts?

Concluding, I am only planning a single HD monitor of 27” I’ll run Windows 10.  For keyboard and mouse I want to keep it simple: CM storm devastator (LEDs for low light is needed) and the Razor DeathAdder mouse. I may get a  Blueray optical drive at a later date for movie viewing. Time will tell…

For the computer itself I am looking at a budget of $1100 to $1300 USD. My need is not pressing so I can wait a bit for money if I need to. Monitor budget???

What do you folks think?

Thanks in advance for the input!

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($89.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro Video Card  ($330.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $1307.62

If you want a bit more GPU power than switch the 6700K to a 6600K and the 390 to a 390X. Oh, AMD processors are useless at this point. Don't even consider them.

-snip-

Go Intel, but don't go with an H97 board with a 4790k, that defeats the whole purpose of the unlocked CPU.

FX 9590 is stupid, it's basically a higher binned, and factory overclocked 8350 iirc.

The only complain I have against the keyboard (CM Storm Devastator) is the LEDs in mine started to die out within the first 6 months, and they flash on and off. I might be replacing the LEDs completely in a few months.

Don't forget to follow your topics.

Thanks! I was looking at the MSI Z97A/S Krait.

Figure I am finally going to drop the AMD idea all together. Now... i5 or i7....

Go i5 and wait until the price drops to go i7, that's my plan. I have my 4690K at 4.5GHz with a load temp of 62c.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

If just gaming, then go i5.

If you're doing CPU intensive tasks, then go for the i7 or a Xeon 1231 v3 (Basically an i7 without an iGPU at the price of an i5)

This will give you the best longevity http://pcpartpicker.com/p/G6dCRB

The i7 4790k and i5 4690k won't last a significant amount more than anything on the AMD side for gaming so if you want longevity I would say go for the i7 5820k for a little more.
