Which windows do I need to get?

Go to solution Solved by techguru,

Windows 8.1 wasn't out at the time, will it work with 8.1 or should I play safe and download 8?

your key will work with 8.1 for activation

but may not work for when doing the actual install..in which case you just use the generic 8.1 install key

The OS on my laptop had its key integrated into the MOBO. I bought the laptop with a version of windows 8 (I'm unsure which one specifically. I plan on swapping out the HDD with a SSD for better speed but that means reinstalling Windows. Do I need to reinstall the original version of Windows or could I just reinstall WX as that is what I updated it to?

you probably have windows 8 core edition

so you should just download the 8.1 core edition

your key may not work for installing 8.1..but you can use the 8.1 install key..then change to your key once you are in windows

That's that then. Another problem though. Clicking on Windows 8.1 on the Microsoft site just takes me to the Windows 10 page. Where on earth do I download the ISO?

should be fine

after you download the file tho

make sure you check the ISO file with a hashing program to be sure it matches that string of numbers/letters

Cool, thanks for the help. Will I need the installation key from somewhere still?
