What? Phenom II beats FX since when? x.x

When you can go from a Phenom II X4 to an FX 8350 and notice an overall performance drop. You know there is a problem with the CPU. Straight up unless the task is able to use all 8 ALU (which lets face it doesn't happen that often) your effectively running a low IPC quad core. And that's without considering that at times only 1 ALU can be used at a time, forcing the other one to wait-thus again giving you a low IPC quad core. AMD jumped the gun and over a cliff when they build a CPU designed for ALU intensive tasks-when most people and programs can't actually make use of the integer performance.

Zen will probably be cool but intel will have something better and cheaper by then

When you can go from a Phenom II X4 to an FX 8350 and notice an overall performance drop. You know there is a problem with the CPU. Straight up unless the task is able to use all 8 ALU (which lets face it doesn't happen that often) your effectively running a low IPC quad core. And that's without considering that at times only 1 ALU can be used at a time, forcing the other one to wait-thus again giving you a low IPC quad core. AMD jumped the gun and over a cliff when they build a CPU designed for ALU intensive tasks-when most people and programs can't actually make use of the integer performance.

What did you combine your 8350 with board and ram wise?

MSI 970 Gaming, just standard DDR3 1600 and a Seidon 240M for the cooler. Everything was setup correctly-with a fresh install of Windows 7 with all of the relevant updates (including the one to fix performance in Windows 7). The motherboard handled it just fine (my friend didn't want it overclocked) and the CPU never overheated.

Well the FX runs best with a 1866MHz RAM with low latency! But that should not lead to any failures or poor performance by much so I blame Windows...

MSI 970 Gaming, just standard DDR3 1600 and a Seidon 240M for the cooler. Everything was setup correctly-with a fresh install of Windows 7 with all of the relevant updates (including the one to fix performance in Windows 7). The motherboard handled it just fine (my friend didn't want it overclocked) and the CPU never overheated.

Well the FX runs best with a 1866MHz RAM with low latency! But that should not lead to any failures or poor performance by much so I blame Windows...

 

A few settings here and there would of landed some nice performance gains but obviously it was shit because nothing can live up to the holy grail that is the mighty i5.... :rolleyes:

Its not about the components. No modern motherboard or indeed the speed of the RAM will affect the overall speed of a system that much. Linus himself proved that with motherboards, and have you ever tried DDR3 1600 underclocked to 800MHz?. You need to stop blatantly ignoring the facts and railing against the experience of others who speak the truth about AMD's FX line. It is shit compared to AMD's and Intel's older CPU, and Intel's newer one.

1. The motherboard itself is actually fine-plenty of VRM phases and the quality is good enough

2. Would that be low latency DDR3 1866? Because I used low latency DDR3 1600 and it has similar bandwidth.

3. I'm not spouting shit-the experiences of others, myself and all of the benchmarking that has been done prove without a doubt how bad the FX line is. Stop fanboying it up (and don't even try to sling that at me-this laptop's price/performance ratio is still far better than any of the newer APU based latpops:

FX likes fast ram, that's why in Cinebench people who clock their ram up get better scores, also I have underclocked my ram and tightened the timings right up and my FPS shit the bed. That's Cinebench-increasing the frequency of the RAM with my QX6850 made a difference in the score, as it does with all other CPU. When it comes down to real world use-there is only a difference in a few programs that also use large amounts of memory. How about you stop talking about something without full prior knowledge?

It improves the score with all CPU. I can prove that right now with my:

  • i5 4440
  • i7 4790K
  • Xeon X5450
  • QX 6850
  • E6500K
  • Pentium 4 631 (though it is really painful to bench its that slow

I'd also do the same with the N970 as I'm running the DDR3 1066 from the P920 it replaced, however I still haven't ordered the 8GB DDR3 1333 (I might as well go all out since I only have 4GB of RAM installed). And no RAM speed barely, I repeat-barely, has an impact in the few games that show any actual change. I won't Google it for you as that would be doing a "Let Me Google That For You', however I can encourage you to actually do some research so that you actually know what your talking about instead of deluding yourself.

Well, TBH my rig fared better on my previous RAM kit than my current 2400 TridentX.

But that thing is doing 2133 at 8-8-9 biggrin.gif

Though tuning it (or any other kit) at that frequency might be harder than just buying a kit that runs at a guaranteed 2400.

On topic, 2133 CL 8 might beat the 2400 CL 10 in speed (Latency) but could be a bit behind in raw Bandwidth (MHz) thumb.gif

(FX likes low latency kit indeed. But that is due to some of the chips having trouble running 2400 or the fact that 2400 is not a guaranteed speed per spec.)

 

So I was wrong, they prefer latency.

Unless I need to, no. I am perfectly fine now with my 6300 and just dropped about $400 into my LGA 775 system so I am broke till next year anyways so possibly then I will go with the next generation of 2011 or just build a nice Hasewell system. (If I win the Lotto keep in mind :P)
