Will my current DDR4 RAM work with Skylake motherboards?

Go to solution Solved by Swndlr,

So Im guessing youre currently on the X99 platform? If this is the case, then yes, your DDR4 will work with a Z170 board.

So I recently bought an Origin PC Millennium desktop which has 64GB of 2400MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM.

When I decide to upgrade to a Skylake motherboards when the Skylake E motherboards arrive, can I use the same RAM or would I need to change the RAM?

PS: I don't know why but Origin PC recommended for a 64 GB RAM configuration, that I do not go above 2400MHz...... I hope this would not be the case with the next Skylake motherboards.....

I tried changing the XMP Profile from 2400 MHz to 2666 MHz but after a few reboots, Windows would show only 48 GB of RAM instead of 64 GB so I went back to 2400MHz

yes. but frankly upgrading to skylake (or even skylake-e) would be a waste of your money.

Yeah, if you want to upgrade, I'd say wait about 2 years before upgrading cause Haswell-e is still really good. Other than that, upgrade to skylake-e if your cpu dies or something and the RAM will be just fine

Don't be fooled by the bottom line of my sig, that is just for my travels.

So you're telling me that Gaben is no God? Enough of your foolishness.

My hardware you ask? I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3217 Notebook... With an LG 25UM57.

If you have x99 the only other consumer platform with ddr4 is skylake. x99 cpus are the 5820k 6 core 5930k 6 core 5960x 8 core. The best skylake cpu is the 6700k wich is a 4 core.

if things keep going like they have for the last 4 years he can probably wait 6 or 7 years before an upgrade makes any sense

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Skylake-E is coming out around April 2016 apparently. It also happens to use LGA2011-3 socket so nothing big to change. Besides, what you said is irrelevant to if the RAM will work if he moves to an Z170 board from a X99 board, which it should.

Shouldn't we be technically be saying "switching to" skylake rather than "upgrading" as most peeps with x99 have 6 cores IIRC

Just explaining why an upgrading would be a waste.

might as well - although even if it's small there should be SOME improvement in skylake-e, which technically classifies it as an upgrade.

Yep, I'm saving up to get an X99 myself cause There hasn't been a lot of great Skylake porcessors revealed.

Well, yeah. I'd say it's an upgrade if it were Skylake-E, but that depends if Intel whiffs on the new enthusiast line or not

No we should be saying downgrade.

you're rgiht all, the current Haswell-E CPUs are better than the latest Skylake because they have more cores. If I do upgrade, it would only be to get a better motherboard with proper X16 PCI-E speeds.

At the moment on my x-99 Deluxe, I have:

Slot 1 = 980Ti

Slot 2 = Empty

Slot 3 = 980Ti

Slot 4 = Intel 750 1.2TB PCIe SSD

If I install my SoundBlaster Zx Soundcard in any of the other empty PCIe slots, then one of the GPUs drops the speed to 8X while the second one remains @16X

This fluctuation in speeds between the 2 GPUs causes the performance to drop by 15%. I cannot find a way to force both GPUs to run @8xKiritox8, it's always one @8xKiritox8 and the second @16X

So for now I removed the SoundBlaster Zx and have both GPUs running in tandem @ 16X

That's the only reason I may want to upgrade. The 5930K CPU is rock stable though @4.4 GHz

Either way, Skylake-E is still two enthusiast CPU generations away since Broadwell-E hasn't even come out yet.

ohhh, so I made the right choice 2 months ago by not waiting for Skylake and getting the 5930K. Thanks man
