That PSU will be fine if you already own it. If not then don't buy it- way overpriced. EVGAs B2 will be a better choice as well as the Antec HCG. Edit: what the actual fuck are you water cooling a 960 and locked CPU for...

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Antec High Current Gamer 620W/520W.

I'd also suggest a R9 380 if you haven't bought the 960 - about 15% faster than the 960 on average.

^^ these are valid recommendations, the GTX960 is not that great of a performer for the price range and these PSU's are very good...you could also look at seasonic Gseries 550W or XFX XTR 550W (same thing pretty much, some extra features on the XFX) or corsair CSM 550W or something like that but the antec if at good price is nice too.

EDIT: with the prices right now if you don't want to overspend this is a nice unit for 60$ it will fit your system perfectly:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs550amaag1

This one cost a bit more but it's a much better unit:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ssr550rm

Or this one which is the one i have in my machine right now, it's flawless the fan on it won't spin until you play demanding games for some times...on desktop and stuff it's idle and when it kicks in you won't hear it as it use a top quality fan:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550bbefx

Basicaly the XFX is the same internal as the Gseries from seasonic but it has an hybrid fan which is also a better quality fluid dynamic bearing fan.

G-series are overkill really - even S12G are overkill. CS are not exactly good for OCing - mediocre voltage and ripple control so I'd suggest not running them on a build with a Z-board.

i linked the CSM which is gold rated and semi-modular, the internals are also a lot better than the mediocre CX series...just saying :)

It's not the best but it goes for 65$ right now so it's still a good deal but i would go with the XFX XTR 550W i couldnt be any happier with mine.

Might be overkill but a PSU need to be well built (overbuilt) and it will allow for a lot of expansions and pumps and fans and better GPU down the road and stuff..i don't consider it overkill.

Unless you're doing video/audio editing I'd go with a 4690K and call it a day. i7s don't contribute anything to gaming.

I know - CS are decent 80+ gold PSUs but the voltage and ripple control as well as the chinese caps are not something I'd refer people to if they want to overclock anything beyond a pentium.

it can do a lot more than that honestly...most rigs pull a lot less power than you would think...check my signature, my machine is overclocked on both the CPU and GPU and i pull around 350-370W from the wall when gaming...that with a 90% efficiency PSU means the PSU is only putting around 315W to power my PC...so it's not even really ''working'' to be there...the CSM i'm 100% sure could power my rig with everything overclocked balls to the walls easily.

I always thought that i7's where made for heavy work loads/ cpu oriented games?

in some newer multi-threaded games they can help achieve higher framerates vs. core i5 but we are talking like 115FPS VS 130FPS...so unless you aim for 120hz gaming you won't notice the difference...and in many games the performance remains exactly the same...but your friend stream and render from time to time so hyper-threading might come in handy you might want to look at a Xeon E3-1231V3 which is a ''locked i7'' in that it can't be overclocked but feature hyper-threading so 4 cores 8 threas...better multi-threaded performance than core i5 and same performance in games, but better at rendering and streaming for not that much more.

Nah - CPU-heavy games rely on strong single cores - not hyperthreading.

It could - but that doesn't mean it's a good long-term solution. I'd pick an S12G over a CS any day of the week. And yeah - some smart people told me "550W is cutting it close" - BS.

BS for sure...i was amazed at how low the powerconsumption on those high end gaming machine really is in fact...you remember earlier today when we argued even the build with the R9 390 was only pulling 390W from the wall or something.

Yup - the myth that "my PC raises my power bill by *insert 3-digit number* because it has AMD or I need a *insert 4-digit number* Watt power supply!" is a very old and common one.

yeah, but when you run an overclocked AMD FX CPU + a demanding video card (such as my GTX780 for example) you do end up with a rig that will flirt with the 500W mark from the wall...but this is normal the FX CPU can pull 250W easily by itself when you run it at like 1.45v 4.6ghz like i was doing for example :D

intel CPU's are very efficient though my overclocked i7-4770K still pull less than 110W with a 1.2v overclock...

250W? Really? I know the 9590 @ 5GHz can reach 200W but yeah.

The people who would actually go full out LN2 on a 8350 @ 8.5 GHz are far and few between. For a single card I've not recommended a PSU higher than 620W and for dual I'd usually say 750W

i would think so yeah...assuming my 4770K as i said will hover at around 110W...500W from the wall previously, now 370W at worst...this would leave 130W on the table for the FX...130W+110W=240W or so.. :(

It depends on other factors - the motherboard, the drives and even the PSU. But yeah. I wouldn't be surprised. I miss Phenom II - the last good AMD gaming chip

everything is the same except motherboard and CPU :)

in fact i added two SSD's and two other RAM DIMM since...so it's in fact even worse!

RAM is 1.5V and low amperage so typically very low power consumption.

SSDs' usage I have no idea about

in some newer multi-threaded games they can help achieve higher framerates vs. core i5 but we are talking like 115FPS VS 130FPS...so unless you aim for 120hz gaming you won't notice the difference...and in many games the performance remains exactly the same...but your friend stream and render from time to time so hyper-threading might come in handy you might want to look at a Xeon E3-1231V3 which is a ''locked i7'' in that it can't be overclocked but feature hyper-threading so 4 cores 8 threads...better multi-threaded performance than core i5 and same performance in games, but better at rendering and streaming for not that much more.

so then i would get this, and overclock it?

Xeon isn't OC-able - it's perfectly fine even @ stock.

4690K is OC-able and it's also enough.

Ok, thanks.

another thing is that the 4590k, if I do get it, then ill be water cooling it... or I might half-phase. I don't compleatly know yet. would you have any recommendations for a custom loop for under 200?
