So I need a low profile cooler that is LESS than 120mm. 120mm is to big for my case. Well my motherboard. Oh... My Motherboard is well weird.. Here let me link you to it.

If you scroll down to where the motherboard is you notice the mounting holes. What mount is that? It's not AMD because AMD uses a long mounting thing. Looks more intel then anything to me. Well I need a low profile less then 120mm CPU cooler. The stock one is decently loud and when it ramps up it sounds like a jet engine. This CPU cooler will be used in other builds. Gotta be less then $40. ( Can be a little more, No more then $5 ) Was looking at Noctua's low profile but like I said the mounting holes are kindda weird.

This seems like a task for HP Modding Demetria.

So first thing I want to warn you about upgrading a cooler on a HP: You NEED a down draft cooler, it was designed this way and if you dont your motherboard will get extra toasty(I'm doing a PSA thread on this soon, since my green motherboard is turning brown from the heat from not using a down draft cooler).

Second: HP motherboards basically have DRM for the fans, no joke. Luckily with PWM I think its less of an issue now, however I'm not not entirely sure. If you want to play it safe, buy a cooler that can accommodate the stock fan, so that you can swap the fan to keep the motherboard from bitching.

Last thing: Get ready to use your Dremel(or if you don't have one, you might need one). I don't remember the spacing of the holes(if you could measure that for me that'd be great, lol), but I'm fairly certain its not the same size of the Intel sockets. If anything, you might need to drill out the holes/slots on an Intel cooler, but you probably could get creative with zipties if you want to.

This might seem like a lot, but HP's aren't designed to be upgraded.

Edit: What size is the stock fan? 80mm or 92mm?

@QueenDemetria It's rougly 3x3 inches. Also has a 92mm fan on it. Whats a down draft cooler also? Also yeah it is using a PWN fan it may not be an issue.

Okay so the size helps me and it having a 92mm fan is good. A down draft cooler is one like the stock one, where it pushes the air downwards, vs something like a Hyper 212 Evo that "stands up" and pushes the air across.

HP "tunes" the stock fans to the motherboard, so that while it boots it checks the RPM at a certain estimated speed(like 30%). If the aftermarket fan doesn't match that speed, then it won't boot because it thinks your CPU fan is damaged(by not spinning fast enough). HP uses some extremely high quality fans too, so they spin at much higher RPMs while requiring much less power. From my testing, most aftermarket fans spin too slowly and the motherboard forces off(even though it would technically be fine, ugh).

And here we go, to all the people that say "math isn't needed in life" look at this shit:

So if the HP socket is roughly 3x3 inches we have to do the pythagoean theorem, so 3^2 + 3^2 = 18  and sqrt(18 = roughly 4.25 inches

Now I chose a 1150 socket to reference the size and found out its 75x75mm, so 75^2 + 75^2 = 11250 and sqrt(11250 = roughly 106mm =10.6cm

Using bing conversion later and  10.6cm is roughly 4.17 inches(or if you want to use metric, 4.25 inches is roughly 10.8cm). So, they are close, but not the same. At this point zipties and a Intel 1150(55,56)are looking like a pretty good options IMO.

Edit: LGA 775 is 72x72mm, so its even smaller, and LGA 2011 is 80x80mm so its too big.

Edit#2: An exact measurement of the HP socket will help if you can.

Like I said "roughly" 3 inches. It may be a bit short or long. Tape measure wasn't the best thing to use. I can get an exact one later in probably an hour or so. Thanks for the help also.

Yeah no problem :), but I'll be around and subbing to this thread.

Also when measuring use whatever you want to use, I have no preference between imperial and metric.

The tape measure just wasn't accurate, with a ruler I could get s more precise measurement,
