I am Torn

dashton27

So far I have purchased the PSU, Case, and MOBO but I am torn in buying such a high quality GPU. I will only be playing games like CIV 5, lotrbfrm2, and other games that require similar graphics ( NOT games like Crysis 3 or the Witcher). I will also be using software such as autocad, 3D solid-works and ARCGIS. So I am asking the Linus Tech Community for your opinions on whether you think this will be overkill or just right. I am also very open to an other tips/suggestions on other components.

The GPU is fine - you won't feel pressure to upgrade in the future - you could go with a 380 but 390 is simply better.

The PSU though, is very overpriced and not entirely worth the money.

Hi torn,

Invest in a i7 4790K and get the r9 380 or R9 290 instead. It will help you in some of the work you do (I could be wrong though).

I know, I have been told that a few time about the PSU. I got it on sale for $75 though. So i dont know if it would be worth sending back in and replacing.

Why would he need an i7? :o

Not sure - it's likely going to be fine I'd imagine.

He says he will use it for Autocad and for some other 3D modelling software programs, but I haven't used those. But, from what I heard from forum a i7 might help.

Welcome to the forum, Torn.
You should try to find a cheap R9 290 if you can. If you can't find any, then the 390 will do the trick.
Also, change the SSD to a 250GB (850 evo 250gb for example)

Not really worth downgrading to a 380 for an i7 but it would help with CAD - true.

He won't be playing anything intensive though.

True - but the 390 will last him longer than the 380.

I am under the impression that the devils canyon i5 is a very powerful CPU, Would upgrading $100 to the i7 be worth it?

and drop the hard drive? Would this just be for more storage or would it increase the performance?

Yes, you get hypertheading, which may help in rendering 3D.
