My friend recently installed Windows 10, on his cheap Toshiba laptop (which has an amd apu), and simply, he cant play any media files (we only really tested mp4, at least).

Using the new media player, it just wouldn't play, and using good old windows media player, there was no video but there was only sound. This happens on all mp4's we tested.

He sent me the exact file, and it played perfectly on my phone and on my computer.

This all worked just fine back when he had Windows 7.

I don't think I have anything much else to say, except that hes desperate to fix it.

Thanks.

Did you do a clean install or a upgrade install?  And it looks like the notebook doesn't support Windows 10 yet either.  And knowing Toshiba, they probably wont change that.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Upgrade install. No way hes going to do a clean install.

VLC ?

Nope.

Codecs?

Installed K-Lite. The new media player now plays sound but not video, but good old windows media plays the whole thing just fine.

But, hes trying to import the clip into Windows Movie Maker (hes trying to make a video) and the video is erroring, with "0x87160139"

Then that is the problem.  He probably has leftover drivers and conf files causing conflicts as well as the drivers are either generic drivers or not installed at all.  Maybe even worse they could be Windows Update drivers.  Please advise him to do a clean install.  If he feels uncomfortable with it, have him follow the guide in my signature.

You should ask him to perform the Clean Installation.

It's gonna help a lot in many ways.
