Hi guys I was wondering if you could help me with a problem.

I just put together a build and it doesn't seem to be powering on at all. Power seems to be getting to the motherboard as the on board LEDs are lit up but when pressing the power button on the case nothing happens, I also tried using the onboard power switch and that did nothing, all the cables have been double checked and are all connected. I believe it may be a problem with either the processor or motherboard but I have no way of knowing which one.

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance

To make sure the power supply will actually start up at all, could you jump it?**

**Note, this will not necessarily diagnose the problem.

Nothing at all happens when you try and turn it on? No fans spinning, nothing?

did you make  sure you hooked up the 8pin connector at the top of the motherboard? all the ram is in the right slots?

Nothing, no fans spin no lights nothing

did you make  sure you hooked up the 8pin connector at the top of the motherboard? all the ram is in the right slots?

8 pin is connected, ram is in slots securely

Use the lights to try and figure it out, also the bios doesn't show up?

Lights don't really show anything other than lighting up the on board power and reset buttons

I was thinking about doing that, is it safe to do?

100% safe. It's exactly what your board does when you push the power button(or short the power switch headers on the board together).

put one stick of ram in an unused slot.

Ok will try that, do you know where I can find details of doing it? I know you need to cross two wires on the 24 pin connector but which ones are they?

Unplug everything from the motherboard/video cards. You can leave the SATA power connectors in your hard drives if you wish to give your power supply a small load. Grab the motherboard power connector from the power supply, and find the green wire and [any] black wire. Insert one end into the green wire, and the other end into the black wire. If you have a power supply with all black cables, I can get you a picture of a motherboard connector as a guide.**

**Be sure the power supply is off or plugged(or both) before doing this.

I'm using an XFX 650w power supply, what will I notice if it is functioning? Will the fan on the bottom start spinning? Also is it safe to run the power supply with no components attached?

If the power supply requires a certain amount of load for the fan to spin up, you won't here anything. And yes. It is 100% safe.

And can you link your specific power supply?

Any slot in particular? Its an X79 board so 8 slots to choose from, should I use one stick until I can get it running then?

just keep moving the DIMM around to see if there is anything wrong with the motherboard slots. you can also try different ram DIMMS.

The power supply doesn't seem to have that feature I was talking about with the fan not spinning up when below a certain load.

fan doesn't spin up when jumped but I assume thats due to zero load, I do have another rig I could test it on but I will try that later.

Moved the ram to every possible configuration no results.

My thoughts are that the CPU or motherboard are faulty.

If the fan doesn't spin up, are there any case fans (molex) you could connect up to test to see whether the PSU does turn on. Also, follow all of the details listed in this thread.

I'm assuming you've made sure the Front panel headers are all plugged in correctly?
