Hey guys, I have few questions. As you see in the title I want to make a server for my family.

I had that PC for over six years and i've moved on x99 platform.

Spec of old PC:

Intel core 2 Duo E4500 (Arctic Frezer Rev 2 or sth like that CPU cooler without fan, because it didn't spin at all.)

Msi NEX P35

500GB WD Green

Ati Radeon 5770 VaporX

I had 4gb of Patriot RAM inside but it was corrupt, so I'll need to buy new ones and also a new PSU. currently I have LC 8500BTX 480W.

Cpu temp. are in between 40-50 so it's good.

The question is. Is it worth to upgreade this pc with new ram and psu and 4tb of storage?

There is also that. On the mobo friend of mine swap few condensators or sth like that, because they were faulty.

Will this pc run stable enough to use it as a home server? Previously I had a lot of BSOD problems (due to faulty ram).

What should I do?

Thanks!

I guess it's enough just for backing up files.

Just use this rig.

You'd be good to go.

Okey. Well I was thinking of buying new 450W PSU, which is pretty good. Any Ideas?

Server it up.

Ram is cheap, PSU's are decently priced and 4TB hdd's are about

€140.90

What about if I wanted to have this server running 24/7? Should I go with WD Red or sth else?

You can go any series honestly. It is running 24/7, but HDDs shut down when not in use. I've had WD Blue run for 2-3 years inside DVR systems with constant writing and overwriting, never shut down unless it's an intentional reboot. So in a use case scenario like yours when you are not constantly writing or reading, it's going to last AGES! :)

Yep, WD Red is good for 24/7 operation! Go for it!

Oh that is great!I was looking at Intenso drives. Are they any good? If they aren't i'll pay a bit more for wd green.

Not sure, never used them. WD Blue or Green is fine. Green runs cooler though and you can get 5400RPM for storage, since it doesn't need to be top speed, it's more about life span and running cool and quiet. :)
