Hard Drive - Slow boot - Help

Hi all, I recently purchased a Samsung EVO 250gb SSD. I unplugged my old 1TB HDD and plugged in my new SSD into a SATA 3 6gb/s slot on my AsRock H67m Mobo. I completed a clean re-install of windows 7 on my new SSD and downloaded all my most 'played' games and apps. The new SSD is super quick (boot time of roughly 13seconds), however my old HDD was also quite quick with a boot time of roughly 23seconds.

 

Once I was satisfied I had everything I wanted on my SSD I plugged my old 1TB HDD back into the MOBO using a SATA 3gb/s cable into the 3gb/s slot. The boot time went from 13 seconds with just the SSD to about 1minute with the HDD plugged in. The bios took forever to beep and windows took forever to load into the login screen.

 

Anyone got a possible answer to this? Cheers.

I didn't have a good boot time for windows 7, time for an upgrade?

Did you have Windows installed on the HDD previously? Did you format Windows off the HDD?

Did you have Windows installed on the HDD previously? Did you format Windows off the HDD?

I didnt format the windows off the old HDD, but i didn't think I needed to as I made the SSD the bootable drive. Was planning to wipe the old HDD after i installed the SSD as I've heard you can do that.

Upgrade to windows 10.

you will notice a diff

I upgraded to 10 and it was really nice, however it does not support my wireless drivers for Netgear, yet so had to revert back to 7 until they do. My connection was coming up as 'Limited' even though I did an upgrade of drivers.

It more-so feels like a 'laggy' boot time when I plugged the HDD back in with the SSD. Going from a boot time of 23 seconds just with the HDD to almost a minute+ seems like something is amiss. Maybe my SATA cord is faulty or the power connector i used was faulty. I'll try another when I get home from work.

Just so you know, Windows will actively search for other drives that are marked as bootable and have an Windows OS/bootloader on it. 

 

Although you're booting from an SSD, the Windows bootloader might try and chain link the old drive as bootable. If you press F8 at bootup to get the startup options, do you see your old drive/windows install? If so, you're going to need to format that drive to prevent this from happening.

Thanks mate, I'll have a look tonight. I checked my bootup options in bios to see if it was registering the old drive but I may have missed it. I'd say you are right and that could be the culprit. Cheers for the help I'll let you know if this fixes the issue.
