So I've been digging through Ark when I noticed that the i3-4130 is the WEAKEST desktop i3 while the i3-4370 is the STRONGEST desktop i3. Now, there's a $30 difference here, yet performance suggests that lower end i3's are like beefed-up Pentiums, while higher end i3's are like toned-down i5's. The cheapest i5 right now is the i5-4460 and that costs $190; the i3-4370 only costs $143. If this chip has the middle end performance on a middle end price, why is it getting no exposure?

They're both haswell based, and even if the 4370 is a refresh, it only offers a higher clock speed; nothing else.

If you look at the passmark scores, the i5 offers a much better score.

The i3 isn't worth the money unless you're suggesting a low-mid end build.

Because i3s don't give you the 'bang for the buck' that both locked and unlocked i5s do compared to other choices.

BTW, the correct terminology is 'mid range', not 'middle end'

well the i3 4130/50/60 are great cpus for their price

why do people rely on that website instead of actual benchmarks

Even if it's not that accurate, it's good enough. (It's just really easy to cite.)

It's also pretty obvious that 500mhz of extra clock speed, very slightly modified architecture (a refresh) and an extra 0.5MB of cache will make a drastic difference.

Even if the i3's aren't that bad for certain builds, the best bang for the buck chip is the i5 hands down.

Let me re-iterate; other than "fidelity features", the only thing you're losing is physical core states and 2 MB of L3. i3's have hyper-threading. For what I'm building, I'm a clean person, so I'll never need more than two physical cores.

the i3 will do just as well as the i5 depending on the game

The i5 is more "future-proof" (no such thing as future-proof) and offers more performance for real life usage.

Like I use the Adobe Suite frequently so CPU performance is kinda a priority for me.

Yes the i3s are good enough for gaming, especially with DX12 coming along the way; but it isn't appropriate for all types of usages....

yeah its not as good as the i5 on certain thing but it does have 4 threads which help it keep up with the low end i5's

The i3-4370 IS the fastest dual core processor. ALL i3's have hyper-threading. Do the math.

i know that but its not worth it its only about 2Mhz faster then the 4160 and $30-40 more so not worth it

Because i3 are for budget builds, so most will just pick the cheapest i3. It's when all parts are picked and there is still some left over, it can go towards a faster i3. Sometimes a faster i3 will have the same price as the cheapest one.

I guess we'll never know because i3's aren't getting the exposure they need.

well the 4130/50/60 are getting the exposure they need but they deserve a bit more exposure
