Hi so currently I'm with rogers and I'm done with the shitty technicians they send over and the constant problems I have with them. Not only that their plans are overpriced like hell (This is Canada btw.) Bell is pretty much the same thing as rogers so I don't plan on switching to them. With my recent connection being cut off, I've decided that I've had it and want to switch ISP's that actually knows shit instead of saying "Uh, did you unplug the router!" While looking through some ISP's, I've stumbled upon beanfield and looked at their plans, where they offer unlimited internet with 100 down/up fiber internet (Holy F***) for $45. Looking at the reviews, they seem to be a good and stable ISP but they have port 25 disabled. So this is my question. I hear port 25 is an SMTP transfer between mail and is blocked under that ISP, does that mean I cannot send any e-mails through gmail, hotmail etc. or only a certain type. Is there a way to open port 25 and if not another port I can re-direct my mail through.

And to those who have beanfield internet, give a review of them here because I'm considering switching to them

Rogers block 25 too, just means u cant host a mail server.

Note: They only do buildings not houses.

You should make sure that Beanfield is available at your location - they sound like one of the small independent Fibre providers, which are generally located just in newer neighbourhoods of the major cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

As for Port 25 - that will only affect you if you use an Email Client on your home computer. It will not affect Gmail or Hotmail if you are using their online webmail.

It will potentially affect your mobile phone though, if the mobile client uses port 25 to connect to your email provider. You should check online to see what ports your specific email provider uses, and you may want to contact the ISP (Beanfield) and ask them some precursor questions about email clients.

Many email providers use port 587 instead of port 25, or as an alternate port.

FYI, Rogers and Bell asks you to do "stupid shit" like unplugging your modem, because 90% of users are fucking morons, and you would be utterly shocked at how many times the technicians deal with people with unplugged modems or phone cords/coax cables that aren't connected, etc.

Most ISPs block port 25, it shouldn't be an issue for you.

Comcast blocks port 25, and I can still use email perfectly fine.

This is what comcast says about port 25:

Port 25 is unsecured, and Botnet spammers can use it to send spam. This does not affect XFINITY Connect usage. We recommend viewing Using Email Client Programs with Comcast Email to use port 587.

I agree.

I used to be a computer tech at Staples, and I don't know how many times we had people that forgot to turn on their monitor, or plug in their computer, and called for help.

Technicians ask us stupid questions not because they think we're stupid, but because they must rule out the basics before they can move on to advanced troubleshooting. The number one rule of troubleshooting is consistency.

Exactly i was working at a computer store this summer and that kind of thing happens all the time. Heck i had a guy come in with an imac with an advert that popped up saying his mac had a virus and he thought it was real. Behind it was 50 porn sites. And of course, no virus to be found. Just porn. Lots. And lots. of porn.

Perhaps they meant a standalone router? Most people just have combo devices (Modem + Router + Switch + AP all-in-one), so he might have been asking whether you had a dedicated modem and separate router?

Port 25... I've yet to find an ISP that doesn't block it.

On the other note, stupid questions are there to speed up the process for the basic users. When you call them and tell them "My internet doesn't work." You're bound to get the "stupid" questions. I usually get passed this issue by asking to be redirected to advanced tech support.

This is also depending on the question. I usually know what the issue is, when and if my internet is down.

Usually it's the equipment that they send us that breaks down. However, it doesn't seem like it's the hardwares fault and could be their fault. I'm still considering switching ISP's. If anyone finds a good Canadian ISP around Toronto, please leave recommendations and links.

Granted, they use the "last mile" from either Rogers or Bell, but I highly recommend TekSavvy. They are a TPIA (Third Party Internet Access) ISP. They operate their own in-house call centre for customer service, which is located in Chatham, ON (Where their Head office is). Their customer service is usually very highly trained. They also operate tech support to a limited degree via Twitter, and extensively through the DSLReports.com forum.
