Hi guys this is my first post and I'm new to ssd's so i'm looking for a little help. I have a dell xps 15 notebook with  i7 8 GB 1600 ram and a 750GB hybrid drive at the moment. I am planning to order an samsung 840 pro ssd on friday. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009NB8WR0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER to replace the current drive I was going to leave the msata drive that's already in. I just wanted any helpful feedback you guys could provide. does this seem like a good drive good performance ect. Also I was looking around online and I found several different places that say I need to optimize my windows 7 set up to make the drive run the best. Looking to see what you guys say about that, Is that the case or can I pop it in and just go with it?  I do some gaming on this machine as well as normal use word, power point, day to day stuff...

Thanks for the help guys

Get the normal 840 instead: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz7td120bw

The performance difference is negligible.

Get an HDD caddy as well: http://www.amazon.com/SATA-caddy-12-7mm-Universal-DVD-ROM/dp/B0056EW4A4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375932775&sr=8-1&keywords=hdd+caddy

Replace your dvd drive with the Hdd caddy with your original hdd in it. That way you still both retain snappiness and storage.

First off thanks cuz that was rolling around in my mind to start. let me ask you this as I understand it the pro drives have better nand and thus last longs more reads and writes and have better speeds for writes like 100meg I think. if the speeds are neg then thats fine but I also want to make sure it holds up I was thinking longevity I do a fair bit of creating and deleting of files just didnt want to burn out the drive. not sure if that changes anything or not.

The Kingston V300 is a better drive than the Samsung 840 at the same price.  In system responsiveness you probably won't notice the difference, but on TLC flash like the Samsung 840 uses, write performance is horrendous.  Kingston V300 uses standard MLC flash which is faster and much more durable.  Same price, really no reason not to.

You seem to have a standard laptop dvd drive and not a slim one. It should work just fine.

you said the 840 and the v300 is that true of the pro series also or no, I only push for the pro option here guys cuz im looking on amazon and the 840 is like 97 bucks and the pro is 137 so we are only talking about a 30 buck diff. I'm not just wanting to throw money away but the other kicker I see is the pro drive is 8GB more then the reg 840 is that alone worth the 30 bucks? I would prob ultimately deffer to you guys as your more knowlegible then I am just want to make sure I make the right choice not just a snap choice I want the best bang I can get for about $130

The Kingston V300 is also around $100: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-2-5-Inch-SV300S37A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/

The Kingston V300 and Samsung 840 Pro both use MLC flash, which is higher performance and much more durable in terms of wearing out the maximum number of write cycles on the drive.

The Samsung 840 non-pro uses TLC flash which is cheaper, but not as durable and suffers in write performance.

I like the extra 8GB but I do not think it is worth extra $40... which is nearly 50% the cost of the 840 non-pro or V300.  For $30 more on top of that you could get a 256GB ADATA SX900 which is another excellent MLC drive.

In any case, both the v300 and Samsung 840 are good choices.

Go ahead and get the v300 as it's pretty cheap right now. There still isn't much of a difference the way you're using it as a boot drive though.
