Upgrade i7 2600 - i7 6700k

Go to solution Solved by brob,

How about:

  • Intel i7-6700K (use existing cpu cooler)
  • Asus Z170-P D3 (use existing DDR3 memory)
  • small tube thermal compound
  • small amount of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol, surgical spirits) and cotton gauze (for cleaning off cooler base)

And, if you want better gaming performance, upgrade the gpu.

Hi, im wondering to upgrade my i7 2600(non-k) to the new Skylake i7 6700k.

The computer has been changed alot, but not the cpu/mobo.\

It used to be a pre-build acer so mobo is not good.

Current specs:

Mobo: Acer Aspire M3970 (LGA 1155)

CPU: i7 2600 (3.4ghz)

Ram: HyperX Furry DDR3 16gb (1600 MHz, running at 1330(limit))

GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 270x 2GB GDDR5

SSD: Kingston HyperX 3k - 120gb

HDD: WD (not sure what color. 2TB

PSU: Corsair CW 750w

CPU Coler: Noctua NH-L12

OS: Win 10 PRO

Im thinking about this: Norwegian site: https://www.komplett.no/product/783616/datautstyr/pc-i-deleroppgradering/oppgradering/oppgraderingspakke-intel-core-i7-6700k#

  • Intel® LGA1151 Core i7-6700K
  • ASUS LGA1151 ROG MAXIMUS VIII RANGER
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2133MHz 16GB
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler

Cost 7599 nok (~900$us)

I use the pc for gamers, video editing, photo editing and some programming. I feel like the computer is starting to run slower and FPS is getting lower.

I'd suggest grabbing a better GPU first.

Anything from a an Nvidia 970 to an AMD Fury should suffice.

your going to spend allot to get an i7 6700k

you could just get a 4690k and upgrade your board cpu and graphics card. what kind of case do you have?

In editing and rendering, you will notice a difference in performance. Especially when you overclock the 6700k.

In gaming not so much, as the r9 270x is already at 100% load in most games, but it's still a great card.

Not much performance difference tbh well there is but not worth the price atm.

Thanks all for super fast answers.

I know it will be more expensive as i have to get a new mobo for any upgrade to the cpu.

My case is: Cooler master CM 690 II Basic

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

You will not see an increase in performance without upgrading the GPU(Games). You will see a decent increase in rendering though. I'd suggest overclocking your current cpu with a new mobo and buying a new gpu.

No, it doesn't make sense unless you absolutely need the new features.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

If anyone wonder about the price, we have stupid high tax in Norway so the cpu alone is 117 $us more expensive than America.

Komplett(Nor): 477 $us (3999 Nok)

Newegg (US): 360 $us (3020 Nok)
