i7 4790k

Go to solution Solved by anthony2686,

I don't think P95 is recommended for Haswell chips (and a couple of other recent Intel generations too)

Try Aida 64

What are my best options for programs that work with a haswell? I have only ran AMD for the past 15 years and have never ran a intel cpu and know nothing about intel, searching the internet I find mixed info. thank you

I was running open hardware monitor and I was messing with prime95 and a gpu benchmark program just looking at the power my system was using and I saw something i wanted to know if anyone else has seen this and if so some thoughts on this subject it seems kinda crazy to me that stock settings would use that much power. Stock cpu settings I was running about 160 watts under 100% load and with my current stable setting under 100% load my wattage was a lot lower about 127 watts. I have a i7 4790k running in a msi z97 gaming 9 ac with corsair red vengeance 32gb with X.M.P. on. my cpu is running at 4.4ghz at 1.170 core volts turbo mode disabled corsair H110 and windows 10 pro with the latest bios. Stock temps are a bit crazy too 91 C max temp while the 1.170 volts was around 64 C max temp.

Could potentially be the chip "thinking" it needs a lot of voltage when it's on auto, while it doesn't. When you overclock you put your voltage manually, and as low as possible. This voltage reduction could be the difference in temperature and power draw you're seeing.

160 watts is nothing lol, at idle i use about 190 watts and playing the Witcher 3 i use about 380 watts. 91c is a bit on the hot side though.

EDIT: my CPU is at stock, my gpu is OC with 120 power limit

If you'r CPU is running at 4.4Ghz, then the turbo mode is not disable

Please use any form of punctuation next time, this is pretty unreadable.

To stay on topic: don't use prime95 with an intel chip. Use Aida64 and if it persists, ask again. Prime95 apperently screws with your voltages or something.

Okay cool I did not know that thank you. This is my first intel chip and just learning. I wish I would have got a intel years ago.

I really know nothing about intel and overclocking and running benchmarks I never really got into and I noticed this and wanted some input so I could learn....

Well, just know you don't use Prime 95 on your chip. To get a more accurate measurement of your chip's temperatures.

What are my best options for programs that work with a haswell? I have only ran AMD for the past 15 years and have never ran a intel cpu and know nothing about intel, searching the internet I find mixed info. thank you

Well, really the only program not recommend for Intel is Prime 95.

A good replacement for this program is Aida 64. (Prime 95 is still used and good for modern AMD CPU's).
