So I'm seriously considering 4K

I have never used a monitor above 1080p. I'm currently using an Asus MX279H, it's a 27 inch, 5ms, 1080p, ips screen. 

I really want to get a 4K screen and am currently looking at the Dell P2415Q as the most likely option. What are the pros/cons of 4K? I know scaling in windows will be picky. I'm also wondering how good it will look if I'm running games in 1080p because there's no way I'll be able to play many at 4K. Would it be better to get a really nice 1440p screen instead, bearing in mind I also do graphic design work?

Pros looks amazing. Cons price and beefing GPUs. For budget go with 1440 with g sync. You will notice a huge difference from 1080

I have never used a monitor above 1080p. I'm currently using an Asus MX279H, it's a 27 inch, 5ms, 1080p, ips screen. 

I really want to get a 4K screen and am currently looking at the Dell P2415Q as the most likely option. What are the pros/cons of 4K? I know scaling in windows will be picky. I'm also wondering how good it will look if I'm running games in 1080p because there's no way I'll be able to play many at 4K. Would it be better to get a really nice 1440p screen instead, bearing in mind I also do graphic design work?

4K on 24'' ? That's insane. You won't be able to read anything anymore.

I would rather get a nice 1440p IPS panel.

I think the best option for video and photo editing is either a 4K at 32'' or larger or a nice 21:9 34'' 1440p. But both of those options are really expensive.

So in your case I would recommend a 1440p, 27'' IPS monitor.

Pros looks amazing. Cons price and beefing GPUs. For budget go with 1440 with g sync. You will notice a huge difference from 1080

Then I highly recommend an Ultrawide 1080p monitor instead of a 4K one. Ultrawide > 4K imo even though I've only ever used Ultrawide. I just know having the extra width is great. Absolutely great. 

Two browsers fit in it perfectly side by side. 

Fits Theater aspect ratio movies perfectly (since they are filmed in 21:9, the aspect ratio of Ultrawide) so no black bars. 

Scaling isn't an issue. 

Costs are similar. 

Wider FOV in games without dealing with bezels.

Then I highly recommend an Ultrawide 1080p monitor instead of a 4K one. Ultrawide > 4K imo even though I've only ever used Ultrawide. I just know having the extra width is great. Absolutely great. 

Two browsers fit in it perfectly side by side. 

Fits Theater aspect ratio movies perfectly (since they are filmed in 21:9, the aspect ratio of Ultrawide) so no black bars. 

Scaling isn't an issue. 

Costs are similar. 

Wider FOV in games without dealing with bezels.

Same. How is the quality of yours? Not to derail OP's thread, but mine is.... lacking.

 

It seems like I got a faulty monitor, but not so much that it truly bothers me. Screen flickers from time to time and sound with it. Some very hard to see and slight damage on the panel too (greys look ever so slightly purple). But I may have caused that inadvertently. 

 

I also have the Dell U3415W and it's significantly higher quality imo.

I have non of the issues you described. Mine looks absolutly fine.

I got it from amazon for a 50€ less than usual because of a small scratch at the back and because the packaging looked a bit damaged.

The only problem I have is that it takes sometimes quite long for it to wake up after it goes into stand by.

Other than that the colours are really bright and vibrant, nice contrast and really damn good viewing angles.

No backlight bleed or any other issue.

... I'm not sure if you were joking/trolling when you said the human eye can't see higher than 720p then. What the human eye can see is directly related to DPI. 

720p on a 60" TV will most certainly look terrible regardless as the eye will discern the individual pixels.

720p on a 20" monitor will be relatively ok because the DPI will be high enough that the eye will have a harder time noticing the pixels and so the aliasing/lines. 

If your goal is higher DPI, then I'd go with a 1440p, 1600p, or better same size screen as you have now. 4K is probably jumping too far ahead since there are still problems inherent to the technology (scaling, for one), plus you'll save money.

Edit: 

1080p ultrawides are cheaper than 1440p standard 16:9 monitors.

All I did was filter for 2560x1080, 2560x1440, and 2560x1600 resolutions, IPS panel, then sort by price after switching to UK.

The Dell P2415Q is £336.59 and thus a bit more expensive than the UW 1080p or 1440p monitors. From £100-40 more expensive, relatively.

A smaller UW 1080p would offer higher DPI while still giving you space on your desk and the UW experience. Just saying.

UW 1080p or 1440p are cheaper than the 4K monitor you are looking at, and you can just get a smaller screen size to make it fit on your desk which will also up the DPI. 

It's easier to get a smaller screen at the same resolution than buying a larger resolution to up DPI anyway (and your GPU will perform near the same, ignoring the extra pixels offered by Ultrawide).

You can still get the 4K if you want. I'm just saying, your reasons for wanting a new monitor mean that UW 1080p, 1440p, or 4K are all valid options with the right conditions (i.e. using a smaller screen size monitor for UW 1080p & 1440p).
