Should I?!

Go to solution Solved by KemoKa,

You'll get a really substantial performance boost by going with just the 4790K. We're talking, like, a 30% boost in overall load performance over the 9590 at stock. Unless you're working on video editing and rendering or something that requires a lot of threads, a 5820K is not necessary.

At the moment I've got a GTX 970 along side an FX 8350 CPU. I'm thinking of getting a new build seeing as Windows 10 is out and it links with your hardware, so as soon as the free year for 10 ends I'm essentially stuck with whatever I'm using at the time, unless I wanna buy a £150 windows licence along with the new build.

ANYWAY.

To the point.

I want to go to Intel because even though I use AMD I'm totally aware that Intel are far superior. Given that I'm currently using one of AMD's strongest CPU's would I see a drastic boost in performance by upgrading to an i7 4790k or would I just be better off completely going for it and buy an i7 5820k?

The reason I'm asking this is I can look at as many benchmarks as I want but I'd much rather have real opinions, and if I chose the 5820k I'd have to buy a whole new set of RAM too as it only supports DDR4, and I'm pretty sure board's for DDR4 aren't cheap.

If I'm upgrading I don't want a slight boost in performance. I'd like a pretty large one.

Any help would be pretty cool.

Jake.

Depends. Are you able to fully utilize the 12 threads and 6 cores the z5820k has to,offer? If no then get a 4790k.

If you only game, neither just get the i5 4690K should be more than enough. If you do video editing and streaming then consider the i7s.

First of all, from what I've read you can still reactivate windows 10 after you change your harware like it was before. That might change your opinion about needing to upgrade. Here is an article I found after a quick search:

http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use-your-free-windows-10-license-after-changing-your-pc%E2%80%99s-hardware/

Secondly, if you DO want to upgrade, I would suggest to go with the newest platform available, which is now skylake (6700K or 6600K). For gaming, you don't really need anything more then an i5.
