vlc or mpc-hc are really the only 2 players YOU SHOULD be using

Personally I like foobar2000 but It really comes down to personal preference in the end.

I just use Media Player Classic, comes with the K-lite codec pack.

 

VLC is an all-in-one type of package, all the codecs a regular user should need built-in. I personally find it finicky with certain subtitles (especially with anime), which is my main reason not to use it, but other than that, it generally works well. I'm not sure if it works when certain games ask for video codecs for video/cutscenes, though, never tried it.
