Hi Guys,

Can someone find me a router that can satisfy my needs?

My current setup is:

Sky Fibre 38mb down and 10mb up. Sky router is the main one, sitting next to my computer (1st floor) and connecting it to the internet via ethernet. I have a powerline setup in that same room, which transmits down to the ground floor, sitting next to the tv, connecting our ps3, and extending the wifi to the whole of downstairs, is another router (Thomson TG587nV2), using the powerline connection. This setup works, but on the 1st floor, is not very strong, compared to downstairs (because the sky router is very weak). Which makes the 2nd floor terrible! Less than 3mb download up there!

So i could just buy another cheap router, and use another powerline on the 2nd floor, to get good results. But i want to get a new router for the 1st floor, that will hopefully cover the whole of the 1st floor, and speed up the 2nd floor. But because of the encryption sky puts on their fibre connection, i have to use the current router, as a modem, so one of the lan ports will go to the new router. According to people online, it would be better to get a cable router, as it can take the lan in straight.

The features i would like the router to have:

  • Dual band
  • Fast AC wifi
  • Gigabit Lan ports
  • Nice long range
  • Affordable price (<£50)

Thanks

Gershy13

You could go for an access point rather than a router. The wireless signal from your router is an access point anyway, so just going with a dedicated one will remove the cost of the routing parts.

EDIT: Ubiquiti UniFi are good. I've got a few of them ready for covering my house's WiFi

Well I replaced my SKY router with an Asus DSL-N66U Works perfectly. The only things you need to do is Wireshark your username & password from the SKY router and transfer them to your new one. But any router that supports VDSL will work.

  • 2 weeks later...

I Kinda want one which has 3 antennas? Like the Asus RT-66U, just AC.

The 66U is nice, but a bit pricy, and its not AC.
