Been using an imac for the past 5 years and i thought it's about time to upgrade. I dont have any experience picking computer parts etc but i have done some basic research and i picked out this list of stuff. I'd just like to have some people who actually know what they're doing see if there are any compatibility issues etc before i actually go ahead and buy them. Also i picked the 4GB video card cause it wasnt that much more expensive than the 2gb version, should i just get the 2gb version instead? I don't plan on doing any hardcore gaming, just Csgo, GTA5, WoW, H1z1 and maybe some new horror releases. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

The list: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/LvRXQ7

edit: I already own the motherboard and the case, my lovely friends bought them for me :P

I think that for that processor, that motherboard is overkill.

You can buy a cheaper motherboard and use the money you saved to buy a 970. ;)

That's my advice! :)

yeah i was thinking that too but the problem is that i already have the case and the motherboard :/ they were gifts from friends so i don't really want to try to sell them or anything. But thanks for your input! :)

Oh, you already have the motherboard and case, well then. Does the ~800 pound price point still hold? back in a tick.

This. Plus: 850 PSU is too much unless you're planning an SLI upgrade. If not, 600 watts will do. 16GB RAM for gaming is also way more than you're going to need to be future proof. 8GB will be fine, unless you're into video editing and 1600mhz RAM is cheaper and you won't notice any difference.

Summary:

  • cheaper motherboard
  • GTX 970
  • smaller PSU
  • 8GB DDR3-1600

GUYS HE ALREADY HAS THE MOTHERBOARD AND CASE

If you got your motherboard and case as gifts, edit the original post and say that, most people won't realise. Also, I'm guessing your budget is 800 quid?

Try this one! The board you picked was Overkill, you don't need it, You can get a board for 100 cheaper and have it preform the exact same! Just changed a bit, More powerful CPU and GPU, and changed to a more reliable PSU

Ok, so first things first. You don't need a power supply that big, I would get a good EVGA 500w one. You will only need 8gb of RAM, anymore than that should just be if you have some spare money. If you can, try to buy the 4690k CPU instead of the one you have.

Get a 4790K or 4690K

Get a CPU cooler like the hyper 212 evo and overclock it

Get a 600W PSU

Get the GTX 970 or R9 390 Nitro

390 nitro is quite a bad overclocker and without backplate tho.

Msi is good overclocker okay cooler. Asus has better cooler but less overclocking ability. Nitro cool even better but even less overclocking ability. Gigabyte does not let you overclock. Powercolor sounds like a bad brand name to me.

I have looked at your suggestions and updated the list, does everything look ok?

It's better:

green ram on red board probabyl wouldn't look too great (just an aesthetic thing, not of major importance)

The Corsair CX series are pretty ordinary, do you have any EVGAs or Seasonics avaliable?

Yeah its a little annoying but the only other red ram i found on the website is 16gb and 2400mhz :/ It doesn't really bother me that much though.

the evga's and seasonics are like $50 more in the same wattage, is there a big difference in performance?

They use much better parts, making them much more reliable (the PSU is one of the only parts that can kill a whole system). But if you go EVGA make sure it's a series that ends in a 2 (B2 or G2 most likely)
