M.2 is way faster than SATA3

you are comparing 10Gbps or 32Gbps!!! vs 6Gbps

It's really very difficult to notice the difference unless you're doing very large file transfers. To another SSD that's just as fast.

SSDs feel fast because they have low latency and zero seek time compared to HDDs, not because of their bandwidth. You can put an SSD on SATA 1.5Gb/s and it feels just as snappy for normal usage.

Hello

Is a M.2 drive worth having as the main os and program drive on a Z97 board or is it better to use on a Z170 and X99 motherboard compared to a regular current 2.5 ssd?

Depends what you're doing with your PC. I find for just games a Sata SSD is more than fast enough for me.

I personally would only ever consider M.2 for its smaller footprint. One has to be a true storage enthusiast for M.2 or U.2 drives.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

I use an M.2 drive for my computer. I have a lian li tu200b case and it is very small. Due to this I can't actually fit a full size HDD inside it so M.2 was the best solution for me. It was also faster so I'm not complaining really.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

I wouldnt bother with it on Z97 as you will be hamstrung on speed (unless you stick it in a PCIE slot and run your GPU at X8, Also you can't get them in >512gb capacities (unless you count intels 750 series). Get a 1TB 850 Evo for the same price and you will get far more milage from being able to store games on it.
