He is gaming

And gaming will not require the I7 as much, unless you play heavily multi threaded games (which are rare)

An I7 is more suitable for balancing CAD capabilities and gaming performance

An I5 will be a better buy if you do gaming alone, because it can still handle games as well as an I7

Multi-threads are also available in the Xeon E3s at nearly the same clock speeds for only $250

From this article it shows that most games will only receive a 2-4 fps difference when I5 is overclocked to match the I7:

That has nothing to do with getting an i5 if not overclocking. you can overclock an i5 too. The statement should be "Unless youre doing tasks which needs a CPU with many threads, go with i5". Not "If youre not overclocking, go with i5"

You increase voltage and clock of your prcoessor increasing heatoutput and performance. Fo gaming I wouldn't go for an i7 an i5 4690K is enough and if you are to lazy to get into OC you can always do it later because it is a K chip and you dont need it as of how it is now.

EDIT: you can danamage your hardware if oyu don't know what you are doing so I'd reccommend reading a lot about it first and always being getnyl when trying things out. Like when you first learn driving a car... you don't go full throttle the first day.

I agree :) but what happens in the future If I want to start overclocking? would I not be better of getting a I74790k then I am ready and don't need to mess around replacing it? I know the I5 4690k could overclock but will it be good enough to play games and record at the same time?

Okay, then I'll restate it

I5 when overclcoked properly, can get enough power to match an I7 in gaming

And what I meant in my statement was, if you got an I7 at stock speeds then get an I5 then overclock, for it will be  better for the money in gaming

If you don't overclock an I7 then get a Xeon for the threads or the I5 K series for gaming

The i7 goes turbo to 4.2GHz on all cores stock, so he would need to go past that. But it's still only in gaming, if he will do rendering etc (which it seems like he will considering he asked if the i5 is enough to game and record) the i7 is a better choice.

Go for the 4790K, get a good Z97 Motherboard and you can let it overclock for you.

Overclocking is basically making the frequency higher, f.ex. you have a 4GHz CPU, and then you overclock it to 4.5GHz, this 0.5GHz is an increase and will get you some better performance. But with a bigger heatoutput, so you would need a better cooler.

I overclocked my CPU from 3.7GHz to 4GHz, and could probably go up to 4.2GHz quite easy.

Do you even know what the auto overclock does?

If I am to go for the I7 should i go for the k version so I can possibly overclock later on?

Do you even know what the auto overclock does?

Depends on which mobo. Some just higher the clock speed as much as it can on stock voltage, some higher both

Depends on which mobo. Some just higher the clock speed as much as it can on stock voltage, some higher both

And some don't even do anything apart from raising the voltage needlessly high(but not in a damaging way, it just "wastes" power that has to be dicipated by your cooler).

I'd say do It right or leave it as it is.

if you get a 6700k with a 980 ti, 750w is sufficient

But rigth now the price/performance ratio on the 6700 is severely bad. Wouldn't he just be better of with a 1231 v3 or a 4790k?
