Hi,

I've been planning to upgrade for quite a while and I've been asking around many times on this forum.

Now I have the money and will be buying this weekend.

My question, Since Skylake launched is it worth skipping z97 and dive to z170? Was planning on getting 4790k + MSI Krait. Now I see that there is little price difference between both platforms, even in terms of RAM pricing.

Thanks

P.S. I will be spending my own hard earned money for this build that's why I want to get everything correct and planned out before buying any part.

DDR4 is still quite expensive and doesn't offer any real world improvements over DDR3 for the most part, I'd just go for Z97 at this point if it saves you a considerable amount of money.

RAM has dropped quite a bit. Many, many kits are now available for the same price as DDR3.

Actually ddr4 isn't that much more expensive. Right now the only thing expensive about z170 are the cpus.

It's mostly down to how much are you willing to spend and how long do you want to be using the same rig after getting to the point where you can't upgrade anymore (in therms of max ram and CPU)

While the z170 will offer more room to upgrade in therms of ram amount and new CPUs, the z97 is still a highly capable platform and the 4790k has enough power for many (if not all) games

They're closer, but not the same (at least here). That's why I was talking about a "considerable" price difference, if it's a few bucks then you might as well go with DDR4, but if the price difference overall is at 50$ or even higher than that then I'd think about it.

Just for the RAM or between the two systems? If the difference really is that small then you might as well go with Z170 and get newer features on your mobo, but if you can get the Z97 system for 80 bucks less (and don't necessarily care all that much about those newer features) then I'd think about going for the older platform.

But the OP isn't there, he's where they're about the same price at the 2133mhz+ clock speed.

Kits are about $105. Only $25 more than the slowest speed DDR3 kits. Not really something to worry about when your build is exceeding $1000.

The ram isn't the issue, its the cpus being $50-$100 more than 1150.

Z97 and don't fall into PC money trap because you know the fact that you can't keep up with the latest technology.

The thing is, I'm upgrading from an A10-5800k... yeah...
