Making stuff for yourself and seeing how useful it is.

Just try stuff out and when you are confused or something is not working just Google around for it, W3School it or ask the forum. That way you are finding out stuff kind of yourself and doing stuff for yourself..

 

That's how I learned HTML, CSS and Javascript, not by following tutorials

I recommend picking up the book HTML & CSS: Design and Build Websites by Jon Duckett.

 

 

It teaches the fundamentals of HTML5 and CSS3, and gives examples for how each thing is used.

As someone who is self-taught person I recommend you to start a project, bigger one, then google parts you need, like:

-Ok, I need header, how to do that?

-Well now I have header, let's move to article part.

... etc.

 

That's the best way, you will learn step-by-step and still got a lot of practices, which is best option for me, it might work for you too.

It doesn't work like that. Thats like saying do you speak third edition websters english or fourth? its the same language. there are just more features now than there used to be. and if you use those features, old browsers (like people who haven't let internet explorer update for the last 10 years) won't correctly display your content.
