Its been a while and I learned more about ibm (pc) architecture and now I am doughtung my old "theories."

Please define the following terms and explain their relations.

 

Memory Bandwith:

 

for example in the forms

Gb/s

and

256 bit

 

How come 192bit results in 1gb and 3 gb cards?

 

For Refrence, I have a XFX 7850 I Gb 256-bit (FX-785A-ZNL4-ish)

I'm not really 100% sure but the 256 bit means the memory bus is 256 bits wide (a bit being a 1 or 0) and the Gb/s is gigaBITS per second instead of GB/s which is gigaBYTES per second.

 

I could be wrong but I think it is something like that *starts reading*

 

The wider the memory bus the more you can feed through increasing your bandwidth, 192-bit with 1GB memory but have x-amount of bandwidth but 256-bit memory bus with 1GB memory would have more bandwidth due to the wider bus or something like that.

Gb/s is amount of data per second
256 Bits is the with of the bus that data can be transferred through.

Think the amount of Bits as lanes on a highway. more lanes = more cars. and think of Gb/s as cars per second.

So if you have fewer Bits but a higher memory clock, you can have the same amount of Gb/s As a very high amount of Bits but with a lower memory clock.

BTW: The amount of Bits and Gb/s has nothing to do with how many GB of graphics memory the card has.
Edit: With "clock speed" i refer to memory clock NOT GPU clock.

The general rule of thumb is 128bits per GB with the exception of amazing memory clocks (GK 110)

the best way of putting it is, that Gb/s is practically the speed your car can do (per second) and the 256 bit bus is the speed limit of the road along the way!

 

Something to remember is that GB/s =/= Gb/s. A Gb/s (Gigabit) is only 1/8th of a GB/s (Gigabyte). the 256 bit bus is usually a 256 Gbit bus, or it will allow UP TO256 Gb/s, hence the speed limit term! :D

I once read a fourm on another site, where the quetion was for celuis (2*3+5), the fourm was closed and ended at the discusiona and arguement between a 6yo and a elder in community center saying wheather green is better then yellow. Keep up this fourm, It Has been Very Helpful

256bit is also how wide the neck of the bottle is, the wider it is the more data can go thru it per second.
