Upgrading my LGA 1155 i3 to a Haswell or 3570k?

So right now, I'm sitting on parts that are 3 years old that haven't been changed, except the GPU which I've had for 2.5 years. So I don't know if I should be upgrading that either. CPU however is my main concern. As of now I'm looking to stream mild-intensive games at 720p, 30-60 FPS. I confirmed I can stream at 720p/60fps games like league/minecraft very well. CSGO is harder, I can't stream 60 FPS but it isn't really a problem since 30 is just fine for me. It's probably my dual core i3 holding me back so I would like i5 quad since it's not expensive and it's probably the next best thing. But since there are newer CPU sockets out right now and skylake is coming I don't know what to upgrade really.

Here are my current parts:

  • CPU
    i3-2120 @ 3.3 GHz w/ stock cooler
  • Motherboard
    ASUS P8H61 LX PLUS mini-ITX
  • RAM
    8GB HyperX Blu @ 1600 MHz
  • GPU
    ASUS GeForce GTX 660
  • Case
    Cooler Master K350 Mid-Tower
  • PSU
    XFX 550w

So all I really need are some opinions on what would be best for the money. I'm really looking to upgrade about $300-400 worth of parts and I'm not really sure if there are some good new CPU/MOBO combos with the new hardware or if I even should upgrade that much anyway. I've been looking for 3570k's to buy but I can't seem to find a reliable source so if someone can find a seller in Ontario or in Canada general I would be super grateful.

If you want to stream somewhat properly you need an i7.

This is not true, a couple of streamers i watch either use an i5, or even an FX-8350. So he would be fine with an i5.

3570K with at least a 4.0GHz overclock will compete/beat a 4690K.

It depends what on what games you play. Minecraft and CS:GO heavily rely on your CPU, your fps will go to crap when you start streaming, accompanied by a ton of stuttering.

Recommend any decent coolers that will get that job done?

Water coolers for the 3570K. H80i. H100i GTX.

My 3570K never goes above 55c with 4.2GHz overclock on a H100i with 900RPM fans.

IDK about air cooling, but most high quality air coolers will be around the same price.

Even without an overclock the 3570K turbos to 3.8GHz, which is faster than the 4460.

Lol, Minecraft does not need a beefy CPU. I imagine this whole misconception spawned out of the fact that it uses CPU more than GPU at vanilla max, but the reality is you need a beefier GPU if you want to use things like shaders and other modifications. With a decent card you could seriously pair it with a Core 2 Duo and it'd be fine, I know from experience. :P

I disagree completely. Java eats CPU, the game is not really limited by your graphics card unless you have an ancient one.. Shaders are another thing, they will stress your GPU of course. I personally wouldn't stream those games using an i5, performance drop would be too huge. Vanilla Minecraft might be doable, but modded MC and CS:GO not really.

Java doesn't eat anywhere near as much CPU as you're thinking, then. I can play Minecraft at max settings and get a stable 22fps with spikes up above 30 fps. And that's on integrated graphics with a Core 2 Quad.

I guess it depends on what people consider a "playable framerate". Even if it doesn't eat that much CPU, it's definitely gonna take a huge hit from streaming.

The i5-3570k makes no sense without an overclocking board, which the op's H61 board is not, and the cheapest I saw the 3570k on ca.pcpartpicker.com was like $357 CAD. For like $60 CAD more you could get an i5-4690k and a Z97 board.
