4790k still worth it?

Planning a build with the sabertooth z97 mark s.

Is a 4790k still worth it, or should I wait for a broadwell - k cpu to launch?!?

I probably won't go for a skylake, because of the lack of a sabranco board.

If you have DDR3 ram that you'd be re-using, you'd have to willingly throw money down the drain to go for skylake. The performance improvement is very, very small.

Well, the Z97 platform isn't exactly going anywhere. It may start to get harder to find that stuff, but you may as well get it whilst you can if you're not interested in Skylake. Though personally, I prefer to wait it out and see what happens.

 

As for Broadwell-K......hell if I know. I don't even know if there will be a Broadwell-K.

Heck, Sandy Bridge is still worth it, and they're going pretty cheap now days used.

worth it since DDR4 is so expensive. once the new chipset and DDR4 drop skylake will come into affordable range and outrun haswell. but that will take a while..

Should I get a 4690k? No, unless....I'll get there

Is the 4690k a great CPU? Yes

The 4690k was the "best" gamming option 6 months ago, but it was not the best budget gamming option. The current reason to get the 4690k over a 6600k is to save money. Which means that now it's the "budget" option. However the 4690k HAS NOT DROPPED IN PRICE, this means that it's not the best budget option.

On to the conclusion, the 4690k is not the best budget or gamming option, as an enthusiast grade CPU it has a high price to performance cost that has not changed. Arguments of "skylake is only slightly faster then broad" are flawed because the same was true of Haswell vs sandy/ivy.

So what should you do? Probably nothing, unless your like me. Personally I have a phenom 955BE, where my SSD is bottlenecks by my sata2, my gpu is bottlenecked by cpu, I don't have USB 3.0, with DDR2 and my OC of 3.9 is maxed out. So I will be going to Skylake this Black Friday, because I'm not going to buy DDR3, or a board without USB3.1.

If you have DDR3 and need a better CPU to remove a bottle neck do what you will. But unless there is MAJOR change in tech the 6600k will last 2years longer then the 4690k
