Hello all,

I'm ordering my PC at the end of August or first week of September and i was planning on doing a X99 build BUT today Skylake came out! To my surprise the new LGA 1151 platform (Z170) does support DDR4 and Thunderbolt 3 (finally).

BUT. The best processor out from this range is the i7 6700k, and is priced at $350, while the best X99 processor (from the i7 range, I know about xeons) is the i7 5960x, priced at $999 and 8 cores instead of 4 and more cache.

Now, my question is.

I was really wanting X99 but now that skylake came out there is ddr4 as a standard and all this new tech is coming out and omg.

For 1080P and occassional 4K video editing, which system would you recommend? A Z170 or X99?

Here are specs for Z170:

Corsair 450D Mid Tower

Asus Maximus VII Ranger V.1

i7 6700k

Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2133Mhz 32GB (4x8GB)

Samsung 256GB 850 Pro

WD Black 2TB

Corsair AX760i

Cablemod Red Sleeved Cables

Corsair H100i GTX

Corsair AF120 Quiet

Corsair SP120 Quiet Twin Pack

Asus AC55 USB-Wi-Fi

Geforce GTX 980 Ti MSI Twin Frozr

Windows 10 Pro

-----------------

Specs for X99:

Corsair Air 240

EVGA X99 Micro

i7 5960X

Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 32GB 2666Mhz

Samsung 512GB 850 Pro SSD

WD Black 2TB

Corsair AX760i

Corsair AXi 24-Pin + Kit of White sleeved cables

Corsair AF120 Quiet

Corsair SP120 Quiet Twin Pack

Asus AC55

Geforce GTX 980 Ti Reference

--------------------------

That's all I've go to say.

Just to make it clear, my question is:

If I have the budget, should I go with X99 or Z170?

Peace

It depends. Haswell-E is currently better then Skylake. Currently I'd go with x99, just because the CPU is better, as it goes for other parts, the prices are really close.

My opinion: x99 All the way!

CPU: i7 5820K Motherboard: MSI x99A SLI PLUS RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2800mHz (4x4gb) GPU: MSI GeForce  GTX 980Ti Case: NZXT S340 Storage: 840 Evo 120gb and WD Blue 1TB  PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3

@DomiZ That's one heck of a list to read from, try to use pcpartpicker.com instead.

Go with Z170 based system, save yourself some cash & spend it on the graphics cards or any high-speed + capacity m.2 drives. X99 wouldn't necessarily be a great investment when you've now got similar if not more/better features.

If you are editing 1080p and some 4K, X99 would be better. But I don't particularly like either of the builds in the OP.

What would be a good build in your opinion in the Corsair Air 240? I'm 100% getting this case or the 350D (just for looks).

Can you give me a spec list you recommend? I need a graphics card like a 980 Ti or better, 32GB + Ram and quick storage. My budget is about $5,000 for the PC only.

If there is a mini-itx or a different micro-atx case you would recommend, I'm open to that too.

My target is a compact editing and gaming beast.

Thanks.

Dude with that buged I'd go with mid tower case like define s and with a custom loop, with 5930k or even 5960X.

But is it needs to be a M-Atx / Itx build?

Is the focus better game performance or better render times, is a smash form factor a must have, also what games do you play and do you need perifrials?

The focus is on a compact, or at least semi-compact (like the 350D) and good gaming performance (1440p or 4K is what im aiming for) and render times are probably #1 on the list, since I need fast rendering.

I play all sorts of games, from AAA titles to Indie games, but here are some examples: GTA V, Project Cars, Tomb Raider, Battlefield or CoD (I play both), Bioshock etc.

Thanks.

This is the build you should get if you really want a Corsair Air 240 but keep in mind that if you got a mid tower or full tower case it would be much easier to custom water cool the build which would take advantage of your budget much better.

Yours Sincerely,

The Beast,

Sean Mullen
