My parents need a solution for backup. I have told them to use Skydrive because i have 25GB.. but they are so old style that they think that it isnt safe.. They simply dont trust it.

What can i do to get my parents feel safe about backuping things on the internet?

Anyone with same problem?

Does is really need to be on the internet, because you could just buy an external harddrive or internal ;)

I would side with the parents tbh, your content on someone else's servers, that you have no physical contact with .. I think I'm old school and I'm only 21, would rather store my stuff on my home server system than some company that sells data to marketeers, but each to their own ;)

If you think about it, what you're doing is copying your files onto computers owned by Microsoft, one of the companies closest to the US government when it comes to selling personal info and files.

Allright guys thanks now i have seen what you mean and i have bought a external hardrive..

Good on ya man, just think about it, those companies could turn off your servers, or could come under a court order like mega did last year/year before, and everyone that stored their content, could not get it back. You won't have these problems with physical storage :)

I feel like Microsoft wouldnt make such a move to make people question their privacy, they are too big of a company and most computers in the world run there whole OS and at least a piece of there software.

I've been questioning Microsoft's privacy practices for many years now ..

I have bought one for them.. The problem for me is to get them trust sites like that..

But why do you need cloud storage if you have your own storage? I mean its the same storage but just closer and possibly not as redundant as cloud depending on how hardcore you set it up.

Why not just create a heavily encrypted Truecrypt container where only they know the password? That way no one will be accessing it but them, even if they upload it to the cloud. It's much cheaper (free) than an external drive, and is remote so something bad like a house fire won't destroy their files.

SkyDrive, DropBox and such.. even if you have your own server hosting your cloud service. It's not safe.

It's fine if you want to have non critically important files which you want to share, like homework, school projects, personal project that isn't something you know will hit big but rather just for you, and so on.

For actual backup, get an external HDD on either USB or eSATA, and use that. You can also use File History feature of Windows 8, to have the system do backups every 10, 20, 30 min or 1h, 2h, etc. on an network computer or external or different drive. This system, allows you also to go back in time on a file or folder. Pretty cool. If you re-install Windows, there is no worries. Not only you can access normally the files on the location where File History stores everything, but when you re-install Windows, and turn back on the feature, Windows will re-detect everything and resume backup process, and continue to allow you to go back on files or folder that was backup before you re-installed Windows.
